Two gentlemen, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, that have won this tournament could find themselves going up against each other in the finals. World number One, Djokovic is looking to end this superb season with another title while Federer also wants to go out of 2011 with a high after finding his good form.
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2011
The ATP tour ends in London and after a grueling 11 months, the top eight male tennis players meet in O2 Arena for the rivals to compete in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2011. The eight players are split into two groups and two of the top players from each group will advance to the knockout stage. All eight players will try to get their hands on the £2,227,500 prize money in which the tournament starts on Sunday the 20th November and ends on the 27th November with the final. Roger Federer won this tournament in 2010 but Serbian Novak Djokovic will end up first in the ATP ranking no matter who wins the 2011 edition
Group A
One of the favorites, Roger Federer, has won this tournament five times in the last 8 years, and looks set to finish this season with a high. 2011 hasn’t really been the year of the Fed Express, no Grand Slam but he is playing his best tennis coming into this tournament by beating Tsonga in the Bercy final and collecting yet another title at Basle. He will face Tsonga in the first match on Sunday and the Frenchmen will have to fight it out for a qualify place with bother Rafael Nadal and Mardy Fish. Tsonga is a powerful player and inconsistent when playing the top boys. The Spaniard, Nadal, looks likely to be favourite to take the second qualifying spot in Group A. He has great footwork but indoors is not really his surface, a reason why he hasn’t done that well in these finals. Last but not least is American Mardy Fish, he has surprised a few to reach this far and with his big first serve, dangerous on this surface but injury might creep in once again.
Group B
London will see one of their favorites to take on court and hopefully see him lifting the title when the final comes. Brit Andy Murray has great footwork and a counter-punching backhand that will give any player a run for their money. He has been playing his best tennis in the last 6 months but an injury did keep him out in the last two tournaments. Murray hasn’t won here before and it would be a major title if he takes it. The world number 1, Novak Djokovic has had a season to remember, three grand slams and a record of 5 ATP Master 1000, looking for his 11th title this season in London. He is unstoppable when injuries don't come between him. He will start his tournament facing Tomas Berdych, an indoor specialist, but this will be his first final and never winning a major tournament either. Veteran David Ferrer completes the line up for Group B and the Spaniard isn’t a fan of the indoors. He will be reliant on the his spirit while improving his serve as that is lacking.
Verdict:
Three candidates are looking to finish this season in a high, Djokovic by collecting yet another title, Federer to show off his good form and Murray in preparation for the Australian Open with confidence. Outsider Rafael Nadal will have to try harder if he wants to get into the mix. There are two players that have previously won this tournament in the past, both Federer and Djokovic are crowd favourites to win in London. If Djokovic can avoid injury, then it is as good as his but if not, then Federer has what it takes to win his sixth ATP World Tour Finals.
