Manchester City vs. Manchester United

The Carling Cup returns and we have reach the semifinals 1st leg of the tie between Manchester City and United. Manchester City will be representing themselves for the first time in the league cup semifinals over two decades while Manchester United are no strangers to playing their semifinal games in their recent history.

Manchester City saw off Arsenal beating them 3-0 to reach the semifinals under Mark Hughes but now, current manager Roberto Mancini will take the team to face Manchester United in a two legged tie over a place for the final. Mancini is currently undefeated with three wins out of three, their recent win 1-0 in the FA Cup against Middleborough is a good run up to the local derby. Mancini should give both Bellamy and Tevez the start on Wednesday after they stayed on the bench last weekend.

The headline is still ringing on the FA Cup 3rd round shock exit for Manchester United last Sunday. Man U was dumped out of the competition to Leeds United at Old Trafford and that spells a bit of a concern for the upcoming derby match for Manager Alex Ferguson. The good news that some of the Manchester United defense players is returning to match fitness. Johnny Evans and Gary Neville could well be starting once again on Wednesday.

Both teams are well aware that the times are changing and Manchester City are spending their way to silverwares. Manchester United are in familiar territories in the latter stages of competitions. This is all new to Manchester City and Mancini does not have a good record in cup competition, he will want to make an impression to keep his job. City to take the first tie.
