With Wimbledon set to commence this week, today on the blog Andrew delivers his up to date Grand Slam winning percentage charts.

Wimbledon is just hours away from the first serve. So today I bring to you my Grand Slam Winning Percentage Charts.
What am I talking about?
Well what I have done for both the mens and womens tour, is compile the results for the last 5 years of Grand Slam tournaments, dividing competitors into 6 classes based on their world ranking heading into the tournament and determining the winning percentages of players from each class when opposing a player from different classes.
The Class Divisions
The classes are as follows:
Class A : Players Ranked between 1 and 5.
Class B : Players Ranked between 6 and 15.
Class C : Players Ranked between 16 and 30.
Class D : Players Ranked between 31 and 60.
Class E : Players Ranked between 61 and 100.
Class F : Players Ranked 101 and higher.
The Results Data
The results are compiled over the last 5 years from the following tournaments, a total of 2,540 matches played for each of the men's and women's tours:
Australian Open : 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
French Open : 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Wimbledon : 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
US Open : 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Men's Grand Slam Winning Percentage Charts
Ok, so let's begin with the men's tour.
| Versus | Class A | Class B | Class C | Class D | Class E | Class F |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class A > |
76.4% | 89.0% | 93.0% | 98.1% | 95.2% | |
| Class B > |
23.6% | 61.0% | 77.6% | 87.3% | 90.1% | |
| Class C > |
11.0% | 39.0% | 63.9% | 78.2% | 79.0% | |
| Class D > |
7.0% | 22.4% | 36.1% | 61.5% | 72.1% | |
| Class E > |
1.9% | 12.7% | 21.8% | 38.5% | 57.6% | |
| Class F > |
4.8% | 9.9% | 21.0% | 27.9% | 42.4% |
The chart above shows the winning percentages for all 6 classes of players when opposing other classes for men's Grand Slam matches over the last 5 years. For example, when Class A players have played Class B, the Class A player has won 76.4% of the time. Or when Class E players have played Class F, the Class E player has won 57.6% of the time and so on.
The chart below shows the same results but for when players within the same class played one another. Winning percentages are based on the player who had the higher world ranking within that same class. So for example, when Class D players played one another, the player with the higher ranking of the two won 53.9% of the time.
| Versus | Winning Pct. |
|---|---|
| Class A | 76.3% |
| Class B | 44.0% |
| Class C | 44.5% |
| Class D | 53.9% |
| Class E | 57.9% |
| Class F | 54.9% |
| Total | 56.5% |
Considering Favourites
Ok, so let's do the same breakdowns, but this time consider when each class is playing as a betting favourite against players of other classes and also within their own class as underdogs. The chart below displays these results.
| Versus | Class A Underdog |
Class B Underdog |
Class C Underdog |
Class D Underdog |
Class E Underdog |
Class F Underdog |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class A Favourite > |
76.3% (38) | 77.5% (71) |
90.0% (80) |
93.0% (115) |
98.1% (107) |
95.2% (83) |
| Class B Favourite > |
100.0% (1) |
72.0% (25) | 69.6% (56) |
79.7% (148) |
87.7% (155) |
90.1% (131) |
| Class C Favourite > |
50.0% (2) |
61.9% (21) |
63.6% (22) | 73.5% (113) |
80.6% (175) |
80.2% (177) |
| Class D Favourite > |
NA (0) | 62.5% (8) |
61.9% (42) |
69.2% (78) | 70.9% (172) |
75.9% (203) |
| Class E Favourite > |
0.0% (1) |
33.3% (3) |
53.9% (13) |
67.3% (55) |
68.2% (107) | 75.2% (129) |
| Class F Favourite > |
NA (0) | NA (0) | 44.4% (9) |
63.6% (22) |
72.4% (76) |
63.7% (102) |
We can now see that class vs class results based on which players were favourites with the bookmakers. For example, when Class A players were favourites against Class B underdogs, the Class A favourite won 77.5% of the time.
As a note, the numbers in parenthesis are the number of matches played in that particular situation. So for example, while Class E favourites have a 53.9% winning percentage when opposing Class C Underdogs, that winning percentage is based on just 13 matches played and should be treated with some caution.
Women's Grand Slam Winning Percentage Charts
Ok, so now let's turn to the women's tour.
| Versus | Class A | Class B | Class C | Class D | Class E | Class F |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class A | 68.3% | 72.5% | 86.7% | 90.3% | 90.6% | |
| Class B | 31.7% | 62.5% | 72.7% | 81.8% | 90.2% | |
| Class C | 27.5% | 37.5% | 63.5% | 81.8% | 79.1% | |
| Class D | 13.3% | 27.3% | 36.5% | 69.0% | 65.8% | |
| Class E | 9.7% | 18.2% | 18.2% | 31.0% | 55.4% | |
| Class F | 9.4% | 9.8% | 20.9% | 34.2% | 44.6% |
The chart above shows the winning percentages for all 6 classes of womens players when opposing other classes. Again as an example, when Class B players have played Class D, the Class B player has won 72.7% of the time. Or when Class A players have played Class B, the Class A player has won 68.3% of the time.
As we did with the mens tour, the chart below shows the same results but when players within the same class have played one another. Again, the winning percentages are based on the player who was ranked higher within that same class.
| Versus | Winning Pct. |
|---|---|
| Class A | 53.3% |
| Class B | 67.9% |
| Class C | 55.0% |
| Class D | 56.5% |
| Class E | 53.3% |

So what did we learn?
It's hoped that the above analysis will help punters with their head to head betting throughout the Wimbledon tournament. While the data can only be considered a loose guide, it's hoped that by considering the results of Grand Slam tournaments for the past 5 years based upon World Rankings, it will give all tennis punters this Wimbledon a sense of what to expect as the tournament matchups develop.
