npowertesttheahses

The Ashes is one of the most celebrated international rivalries in cricket and this rivalry dates all the way back to 1882. The winner of the Npower Ashes Test Series 2009 will have the luxury of keeping the tiny Ashes urn (picture below). This tournament is held every second year and it was last held in Australia. The 2009 Ashes will see Australia travel to England to defend the title. England and Australia will be battling out for the Ashes trophy in the next 6 weeks.

England will be hosting the Ashes's first test match against Australia in Sophia Gaden, Cardiff. England is currently ranked 5th in the cricket world and they will be led by captain Andrew Strauss. He has picked out a few experienced players to join him to battle it out with Australia and some of the players, he has picked, have won the 2005 Ashes with him. England’s key players, Freddie Flintoff, Monty Panesar and Kevin Pietersen are the ones to watch. England will want to win the Ashes in front of the British crowd.

Australia is ranked number 1 in the world of Cricket. They are favorites to win the series as they won it, two years ago. Australia will not be able to use their best players, Brett Lee and Shane Watson, for their first test match against England. Lee recently picked up a rib injury. Coach Ricky Ponting expects a tight series against England. Australia has brought a weaken side to England but the Aussie will still come out with a battling face.

Four years ago, England beat Australia for the first time in 18 years to win the Ashes. The nation went into frenzy mode after the victory. They are hoping to repeat the famous win in 2005 as they did not perform well in 2007 against Australia. Cardiff will suit the England spinners and that could just be the start of an epic battle between these two nations.

The Schedule:

  • 1st test match – July 8 to July 12, Cardiff
  • 2nd test match – July 16 to July 20, Lord’s
  • 3rd test match – July 30 to August 3, Edgbaston
  • 4th test match – August 7 to August 11, Headingley
  • 5th test match – August 20 to August 24, Brit Oval

Check out Ladbrokes as they have England to win the series at odds 2.75.
