Werder Bremen vs. FC Twente
A spot in the last 16 is up for the grabs for both Werder Bremen and FC Twente as they face each other in the 2nd leg in Germany on Thursday. Werder Bremen trails 1-0 from the 1st leg and they will need to score in order to get themselves the chance to be in the last 16. Twente will be looking to keep the score as it is to make it into the next round. One will fall eventually and the Dutch side have the small advantage.
The German side has a tough task ahead of them. They lost the first leg without creating much opportunity on the night and that was improved in the weekend against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend. However, improvement were made on their tempo of play and united but defensively there are still a bit lack lustred. They left it late to draw 2-2 against Leverkusen courtesy with a late goal by Per Mertesacker. Werder Bremen can score goals and they need it. Question is that, can this team avoid the goals going into their net?
In the first leg, Twente goal keeper Sander Boschker keep his team a clean sheet as they go to Germany for the final showdown. If Twente wants to qualify for the next round, Boschker will need to come up with another big game on Thursday. Theo Jannsen’s goal in the first leg was the difference between the two sides and Manager Steve McClaren will set themselves up with similar tactics to make it to the next round. There is self confidence and high morale amongst the Dutch team. They beat Willem II Tiburg 1-0 at home before setting out across the borders.
The first leg was a tight affair and the work rate of Twente won the game that day. The key to getting into the next round might be once again looked at the work rate of the team that wants it the most. Twente have the one goal advantage they are weak favourites to go through.
