Champions League is the most lucrative and the most prestigious annual football club competition in the football calendar year. Every year, premier and elite clubs from 51 different countries in Europe, come together to clash for the most coveted trophy and the most lucrative money prize in the football. It is where great teams and managers make their names and players become. Participation is based on the EUFA’s coefficient ranking system and according to their position in their prospective domestic league.
The Stages
Including the Champions League final, there are 6 stages. The first stage is the qualifying round (1st, 2nd and 3rd round). Lower ranked countries leagues takes part in this stage a round-robin phase and using a two-legged format where team host one match each. The 16 clubs emerged from the qualifying round will join the other 16 seeded clubs from the high ranked countries enters the second stage, the group stages. It composes 8 groups and each group consists of 4 clubs each. The winners of each groups along with the 2nd placers round will advance to the third stage called, Round of 16 stage or known as the last 16. In this stage, the rule states that each club from the winning group have to play against the 2nd placer and both teams clashing must not be in the same country. The winners of the Round of 16 knockout games will then enter the quarter, then semi and finally the final. From the quarter-finals onwards, the draw is entirely random and country protection will no longer be in place and once again the two-legged match with the same aggregate rules apply is implemented except for the final which is decided by a single match.
The Prize
