It will be the fifth consecutive year that these two nations meet for official games. This time it will in the finals of a tournament whilst the previous encounters were valid for qualification campaigns.

On the right are odds for the match between Denmark and Portugal, which will remain visible right until kick off.

Denmark – Portugal Preview: Euro 2012

The Danes have won two and drawn once in those four meetings. One of those victories was on Portuguese soil. A famous 2-3 triumph. In neither of the four recent meetings did we have to beg for goals. No clean sheet for any side with three out of four games going ‘over’.

Even in the last match they had played at a tournament final stage, Euro 1996, both of the nations notched a goal. It had finished 1-1 back then. Denmark would gladly sign up for that kind of result, hoping Germany and Holland harm each other’s chances in the game that will follow by drawing. After the biggest surprise result of the first round of games one would have to rethink Denmark possibilities. A win against the least dangerous of the teams they have been drawn to play would guarantee qualification.

Although recent results against Portugal have been positive for Denmark it will not be an easy game at all. After all it is no coincidence this group is dubbed the group of death. In both their respective matches Portugal and Denmark played the waiting game, breaking on the counter whenever they had the chance. With regards to Denmark it worked brilliantly, and probably that was the only way to go if they were to take anything against a talented Dutch side. Olsen’s discipline stuck into the players’ attitudes and it will have to be their strong point against Portugal as well.

The Portuguese have got good technique but, as has always happened for them in their recent history, they have disappointed badly on the goals front. Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo have to shoulder a lot of responsibility on that front. With the Manchester United forward not in the best of shape, however, the game of Portugal is bound to suffer. Ronaldo does feel the pressure of needing to perform well, even for the sake of a second Golden Ball, yet he does need a helping hand from his teammates.

Denmark – Portugal injury news: Euro 2012

Nani is still a doubt and probably it would be best to keep him out of the game if he is going to repeat the display against the Germans. Olsen should not have many fitness concerns. If those creep up it would mean problems for a Danish team which cannot back up its good starting eleven with players of equal level.

Denmark – Portugal Betting: Euro 2012

As mathematics go this game will have to be a search for three points from Portugal in order to avoid an early exit, and of course a quest for the repetition of the success story that was the match against Holland for the Danes. Olsen’s men will not be underestimating Portugal so they should keep tight lines and wait for their chance as Portugal inevitably grow impatient looking for their goal.

Verdict: X
