Euro2012 – Holland vs Denmark – Dutchmen not yet flying

In the last World Cup the two teams were paired together just like in the first Euro tournament after the turn of the millennium. In both cases it was the Dutch which emerged as winners, scoring a total of five and conceding none.

On the right are odds for the match between Holland and Denmark, which will remain visible right until kick off.

Holland – Denmark Preview: Euro 2012

Holland has always had the upper hand when meeting Denmark in the big tournaments. Apart from when things heat up apparently. As the pressure mounts on Holland have always been a team to prove the least able at dealing with the ticking clock in the background. Not even the jolly band armed with musical instruments and rigorously orange jerseys on the stands have managed to induce a more relaxed stance in the squad. Back in 1992 they lost the Euro semifinal with Denmark. It was not a group match and the Dutch did feel the heat.

Now they meet again. Once again for a group match which translates as home turf for Holland. Everybody is speaking about how well prepared van Marwijk’s side seem to be, and in fact, if things turn out right as planned they may even make it all the way. The selection upfront is excellent with players like Robben, Sneijder, van der Vaart, Huntelaar and van Persie having reached a level of maturity that is conducive to success. They did make it to the final in the last World Cup so this is an argument that does hold water. How can the Netherlands keep slipping up and disappoint even when they have such a good offer on the table?

The manager has thought about getting his players in the right mood for victory by setting up some relatively easy friendly matches. There was a big hype about how they won their last one 6-0. That was Northern Ireland and 6-0 defeats are not such a strange happening against the likes of Holland. They had previously beaten Slovakia 2-0 but lost the one before against Bulgaria.

Denmark’s Olsen had Australia and the mighty Brazil facing his lads and in both matches they showed some very good things. Their game is quite good in going forward and it is no secret they still have to work on their defence. Hopefully Christian Poulsen and Kvist will help in filter out those dangerous cutting passes which the Dutch will be stinging them with. The full-backs will be asked to push less often although usually they are very important for supplying the forwards. Against Holland you can risk getting exposed too much though and Eriksen, Rommedahl, Krohn-Delhi and Bendtner wil understand they will need to fend a little for themselves when it comes to being creative upfront. The Dutch defence is not as flawless as their last two friendly matches may suggest. There will not be need for an inhumane effort for the Danes to try and pull one off.

Holland – Denmark injury news: Euro 2012

Although van der Vaart would like to get his chance again and play from the start in place of Sneijder the Inter playmaker should be fit enough to take on his role behind van Persie. Apart from injury concerns to Dutch central defender Mathijsen, neither manager should be prevented from lining up his best formations for the first Group B match.

Holland – Denmark Betting: Euro 2012

The two sides face off with mirror formations. Olsen will need to be the more prudent one, asking of his full-backs to keep an eye on Holland’s dangerous wide men. If they keep their discipline for long enough they can get their chances too at dealing damage to what is certainly not an impenetrable Dutch backline.

Verdict: Both teams to score
