At the beginning of the 2009/10 season the UEFA Cup was rebranded as the Europa League. The idea behind the decision made by UEFA was to make the tournament more appealing and bring it into line with its bigger more successful sibling the Champions League.

Europa League Group Stages

The group stages of the Europa League are now identical to those in the Champions League where all teams will play each other home and away, resulting in six group games per team. Unfortunately there is still the unavoidable situation where some of the final games of the group are effectively dead rubber matches.

When getting involved in Europa League betting you should always consider whether a team really needs to win. If, for example, a draw is enough for both teams to secure qualification then it may be worth staying clear of backing either side.

Champions League teams

When selecting your Europa League picks for the outright winners market you should always consider the teams which will be entering the tournament at the knockout stages. That is those that finish third in their Champions League group. The 2009/10 season saw European heavyweights Liverpool and Juventus as well as German champions Wolfsburg and Russian champions Rubin Kazan take the step down from Champions League to Europa League.

Europa League Knockout stages

The group stages are followed by four rounds of two-legged ties culminating in the final which is played on neutral ground.

The main areas of consideration when betting on the Europa League knockout stages should be the effects of away goals and the nature of a two legged affair. In the first-leg of a tie you should consider what would be a good result for each side, for example would a score draw benefit the away side? If so then it would not be wise to back that team to win.

Also, if a team goes into the Europa League second-leg on the back of a high scoring draw away from home then they will not need to win at home to progress to the next round. Whilst this does not necessarily mean they will not endeavour to win I could not advise anyone to put their money on a team who do not need to win.

My main Europa League tip is to assess the situation of each game on its own merit and if a side do not need to win then do not back them.
