The Australian Open is the first of tennis’s four Grand Slam events and is held in January of each year. Up until 1987 the tournament was contested on grass but since 1988 it has been played on a hard court surface at Melbourne Park. The 2010 Australian Open was won by Roger Federer on the men’s side and Serena Williams, for the second year running, on the women’s side.

 

The 2011 Australian Open betting will commence on 17th January with the men’s final bringing proceedings to a conclusion on 31st January, it will be the 99th staging of the event.

 

Rafa Nadal

As with all of the Grand Slam events Roger Federer has dominated the winner’s board over the last seven years, claiming four of the last seven men’s titles including back to back victories in 2006 and 2007. He will of course feature strongly at the forefront of punters minds when placing their bet on Australia Open 2011. Rafael Nadal has also enjoyed success down under beating Federer in an epic five-set thriller in the 2008 final.

 

British punters will be keen to see if Andy Murray can build on his successful run to the final at last year’s Australian Open whilst hoping that he can go one step further. He tends to feature in the Australia Open betting at around the third favourite mark, behind the irrepressible duo of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

 

The women’s game has been just as equally dominated by Serena Williams who has five Australian Open titles to her name. However, this time she will have to contend with the challenges of Belgian duo Justine Henine and Kim Clijsters once again as both players look to be recapturing their best form following extended breaks from the game. The trio head the betting markets for the Australian Open 2011.
