The moment of truth is here in Montreal, Canada for the McLarens. Lewis Hamilton won this 12 months ago but it is Vettel that leads the scoreboard before we head into race day. The flat track will be somewhat an eventful day for one that are willing to overtake.
Canadian Grand Prix 2011
The hunt is on at the Canadian Grand Prix where Montreal will see a host of cars reaming their engines to the tarmac when race day Sunday comes along. The Canadian Grand Prix will be held from the 10th of June to the 12th of June in which the Red Bull Sebiastien Vettel is the main man to bet on this occasion.
The race circuit is 4.361km with the race distance at 305.270km. All drivers’ will need to complete 70 laps to be crowned as champion of the circuit and Ruben Barrichello’s lap record of 1:13.622 still stands since 2004. Lewis Hamilton won this race back in 2010 in the Brawn-Mercedes car.
One year on
Last year, a 1-2 from the McLaren at Montreal was just the start of the good things to come from both Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton, but fast forward 365 days, and Red Bull Sebiastien Vettel is running away with the title of being the fastest man on earth (in a car, of course). The young German saw victory in Monaco and open a huge gap at the top with 58 points from nearest rival, Lewis Hamilton. It certainly can’t be all luck for Vettel, winning the last five GP and also with five pole starts, Canada GP will be on his “to-do” list to win. Teammate Mark Webber is playing fiddle to the defending champion and will remain the same at Montreal.
Canada has to be McLaren’s territory and with Hamilton winning twice on pole positions, this is where the chasing pack starts to chase the leader. Strategy certainly hasn’t favored Button when it comes to red or yellow flag so he might need to take on the normal approach in Canada, while Hamilton needs to keep a cool head and let the talking be on the driving rather than in front of the camera.
Last but not least in the chasing pack is Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, he still believes in himself and also with commitments he has taken on, there will be fight from the Spaniard. He finished second in Monaco and that is certainly the determination starting to grow on him and surely others around him.
Practice to Qualifying
The practice saw three crashes and two of resulted into red flag but that didn’t halt Fernando Alonso to set the pace in the practice session 2. He was ahead of Vettel and teammate Massa, while both Hamilton and Button followed through. The main talk of the day was seeing Vettel crashing and both Force India Adrian Sutil and Sauber Kamui Kobayashi crashed into each other. The third crash involved Virgin’s Jerome D’Ambrosio and that was the same wall that took out Kobayashi.
Verdict
The flat track of the Canadian GP is causing problems for driver with the supersoft tyres and tyres will play a big part in this weekend’s race. Montreal will be an eventful race with top-speed straights and sharp corners, the safety issues continues with FIA with crashes happening more often than ever. Somehow mistakes like those are giving Vettel the advantage and if he takes pole then he will have to keep the tyres in neat condition and if not, both Alonso and Hamilton will jump to take over the leader role. Strangely, if there was one bet that might interest a few then Mark Webber is your man to set the fastest lap time in Canada because he holds the fastest lap time in the four out of the six races so far.
