Formula one is bringing sexy back

When the F1 season opens in Melbourne on the 27th of March the cars will once again be equipped with the mother of tyres - the slick. And the new power system KERS. We will take a look at this system, as it might be key in the new F1 season and therefore to Formula 1 Betting. This articles is, thus, a broad Formula One Betting Guide not to be confused with the Formula 1 Betting Previews that can be found in the left side whenever a F1 race is taking place.
Ten years ago the slick tyre was banned from formula one racing. Technological developments had caused the cars to reach speeds that the FIA, The International Federation of Automobiles, feared was too dangerous for the drivers and with the dead of F1 super stars Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger in 1994 in mind the slick tyre was abandoned in 1998. The result was considerable less speed especially in turns but safety was increased.
However, many fans felt the decision to ban the slicks was a blow to the sport but for a decade the grooved tyre was the norm on the F1 tracks around the world. With the return of the slick the fans will now once again see the cars taking turns in incredible speed due to the much better road grip. The slick tyres improve the cars road grip with about 20% so the difference will certainly be noticeable. However, the times they are a'changing, and so might Formula 1 Betting.
Another new feature is much less visible but just as important as the new tyres. Some might recall the popular tv-series Knight Rider staring legendary David Hasselhoff and off course KITT the car. One of the very cool features on KITT was its ability to boost the acceleration. All The Hoff needed to do was to press the Turbo Boost Button and he was on his way. What seemed as science fiction in the early 80'ies is in fact becoming reality in the F1 2009 season.
Going by the somewhat more scientific name of Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems or just KERS the cars are now allowed to store the energy released when breaking. The energy is stored in a separate engine and can be released by the driver when he sees fit adding about 80 HP to the engine. It is estimated that KERS will cut up to six seconds of a lap which is extremely long time in a sport where the margins between lap times is a matter of few seconds. On top of that overtaking is supposed be more frequent due to the extra boost.
Even though KERS sounds like a must have for all teams it is still a fairly untested technology and things like extra weight, aerodynamic etc. need to be considered before the teams are ready to make full use of the stored energy. Hence not all teams will be using the KERS from the beginning of the season - Toyota recently claimed that they don't expect to install KERS until mid season 2009. You should take this into consideration whenever choosing your F1 Picks and Formula 1 Tips.
The season 2009 has been labeled one of the most open in years. All the new technological additions and new rules might equal out the advantages some of the usual favorites like last years winner McLaren-Mercedes have. One thing is for certain - cars using slicks and storing an extra energy booster... sounds like F1 racing got even more exiting to watch.
