Gotze Dortmund

Dortmund and Mario Gotze are back from the International break to amaze the Bundesliga matchday 5 when Hertha Berlin visits. Elsewhere, Bayern is at home taking on Freiburg and Sunday, Schalke 04 visits Wolfsburg.

Dortmund vs. Hertha Berlin

Up to the 11th hour, Dortmund was not budging on parting with their young starlet, Mario Gotze, despite reports of a late and large bid from Arsenal. Although, both the board and fans were reassured by Gotze’s agent, he was going no where and pleasing everyone with his desire to continue his development with the champions. Great news for this weekend as on Saturday, Dortmund fans will be hoping Gotze will display his magic on the field helping the club to get back on track to defend the title. Coming back from International duties, the Dortmund Polish players, Jakub Blaszczykoski and Robert Lewandowski following a 2-2 result against Germany. So players are raring to go. But can Likay Gundogan fill in the shoes of the departed Nuri Sahlin against Hertha Berlin?

Life under new coach Markus Babbel might have taken a drastic turn on the last Matchday, Freiburg finally won their first game, before the international break, against Stuttgart at home, coming away with a 1-0 win. A late winner from Raffael sealed the deal for Babbel’s men in which they hope could be the moment that things turn around. Before the transfer window closed, Hertha Berlin was able to sign the service of Anis Ben-Hatira from Hamburg and it is likely that he will get a chance to debut this weekend against the reigning champions.

Verdict: Home win with some style

Bayern Munchen vs. Freiburg

Home is always a good place to start after most of your squads players return from international duties and Bayern needs to hope that their international players are not hampered with fatigue from all that travelling. Closer to home, Coach Jupp Heynches is hoping to secure the offensive services of Dutch maestro Arjen Robben but it is likely that he will start on the bench while striker Mario Gomez and midfielder Daniel Van Buyten are likely to return to the starting lineup. Bayern should be able to resist the attack from Freiburg as their third consecutive win before the international break might have broken their momentum.

Freiburg finally broke the duck and registered their first three points of the season with a 3-0 win against Wolfsburg before the international break kicked in. In contrast, scoring isn’t Freiburg biggest problem and with the service of Papiss Demba Cisse. He is supplemented by the inform Daniel Caligiuri and Cedric Makiadi, but in their away travels, goals have been flowing while only managing one point out of six available. They travel to Bayern with a bigger chance of scoring rather than winning, also more likely to concede with their inconsistent defenders knocking about.

Verdict: Another home win but surely with some nervy moments.

Wolfsburg vs. Schalke 04

Sitting firmly in the bottom half of the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg is in a strained situation where a season opener win has transpired into three straight defeats for the home team. The international break must have been welcoming as they need to re-group in order to prepare for the onslaught from Schalke 04. Both Patrick Helmes and Christian Trasch must be elated over the new signing from Coach Felix Magath before the transfer window closed. The additions of Kyrgiakos, Cale, Brazilian Chris and Alexander Hleb will give much depth for Magath to rebuild upon. Although, Patick Ochs, Hasan Salihamidzic and Makoto Hasebe are rated doubtful on Sunday.

From the bottom of the Bundesliga, Schalke 04 emerges as one of the three top teams in the Bundesliga and will look to extend the title challenge against Bayern and Werder Bremen, all level on 9 points. Three straight wins must have given them confidence and high spirit amongst the squad. Last season, Schalke 04 was relatively in a similar situation as their host. The transformation must be credited to Coach Rangrick and further strengthening of the team was made by acquiring Temmu Pukki from HJK Helsinki. This team is one scoring rampage with Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on the forefront with Raul as the support role. This will be an interesting affair where goals will be the talking point, for the Royal Blues of course.

Verdict: Sneaky punt on Schalke 04 to win with -1 goals.
