Six male events and four for females with different nations involved and a variety of favourites depending on the race category. Sailing is actually subdivided into three broad classes of races: match races where one goes against another, windsurfing and fleet races where groups are on the starting line. Portland and Weymouth will be the locations for the sailing events at the 2012 Olympics.

Ten gold medals are up for grabs in this Olympic discipline with events panning out over ten different events. Six of them involve men competing while the rest are for the female category. Both the 470 and the RS:X see the two sexes compete, each in their own category. The other two exclusively female competitions are Elliott 6m and Laser Radial.

It is a sport which will be well followed given that a total of 63 different nations will be involved. These are involved in different events but nations qualified for one have not necessarily gained the right to participate in other sailing events. Apart from Great Britain, the United States and France, in fact, we will not see any nation resent in all of the ten sailing events.

In total there will be around 380 athletes gearing up for this discipline with different favourites in the different categories. Below is a mention about sailing favourites and accompanying odds in each of the ten events.

Olympics 2012 – RS:X (Women): Odds, betting, favourites

This event looks like an open contest between Polish windsurfer Zofia Noceti-Klepacka (3.25) and Israeli contestant Lee Korzits (3.50), although Spanish windsurfer Marina Alabau (4.50) is another likely contender. Even Team GB have their chances however, as Byrony Shaw is priced at 6.00.

Olympics 2012 – Laser Radial (Women): Odds, betting, favourites

24-year old Dutch sailor Marit Bouwmeester (3.25) is the definite top contender in this class but home fans will be cheering for Alison Young (5.00) who is also one of the five most likely athletes to land gold here. The others are Lithuanian sailor Gintare Scheidt (5.50) and Belgian Evi van Acker (6.50). The only non-European set as favourite in this class is American Paige Railey (7.00).

Olympics 2012 – 470 (Women): Odds, betting, favourites

In line with the favourite individual sailors for the above mentioned races we can see how it is basically the same countries which rank at the top in the 470 team event. Team GB are rated highly at a price of 3.50. Spain (4.50), Holland (5.00) and New Zealand (5.50) follow in that order. Outsiders in this category are France (9.00).

Olympics 2012 – Elliott 6m (Women): Odds, betting, favourites

The Elliott 6m should be a very interesting one with the Anglo-Saxon team openly out to beat the other main contenders in this category, the United States. Team GB (2.75) and USA (2.75) are given equal advantage in the Elliott 6m. Right behind them are France (6.00) and Australia (6.00), both priced equally too.

Olympics 2012 – RS:X (Men): Odds, betting, favourites

Just like in the same event for women Israel and Poland are the main contenders for gold with their respective windsurfers, Shahar Zubari (4.33) and Przemyslaw Miarczynski (4.50). Nick Dempsey (5.00) gives Team GB are very vivid chance at winning this event, just like Dorian van Rijsselberge (5.00) does for Holland. France’s hopes cling to Julien Bontemps (6.00) and Jon-Paul Tobin (8.00) gives an outside chance to New Zealand.

Olympics 2012 – Laser (Men): Odds, betting, favourites

Odds are short on Tom Slingsby (1.66) who gives Australia a great chance at gold in this discipline. It seems only home fans’ favourite Paul Goodison (4.50) can upset the odds.

Olympics 2012 – Finn (Men): Odds, betting, favourites

It is the same story for the Finn event but this time the absolute favourite is Team GB representative Ben Ainslie with odds cut very short at 1.50. USA representative Zach Railey (8.50), brother of Paige, is one of two sailors who can upset the home nation. The other is Rafa Trujillo Villar (9.00) representing Spain.

Olympics 2012 – 470 (Men): Odds, betting, favourites

Even shorter odds are available on the favourites in the 470 sailing race. Australia can be taken at just 1.40 and the only real threat to that shiny gold medal are home side Great Britain at a price of 3.50.

Olympics 2012 – 49er (Men): Odds, betting, favourites

Australia (2.00) are again the favourites for the 49er class but this time the real outsiders eager to challenge for the top place on the podium are Denmark (4.50). Team GB (8.50), New Zealand (8.00) and France (8.00) are somewhat distant but all ready to fight for a final place in the medals.

Olympics 2012 –Star (Men): Odds, betting, favourites

In the Star sailing event we have some new names on the short list which do not appear anywhere else in this discipline – Brazil (2.75), Germany (5.00) and Sweden (8.00) cluster around Team BG (4.50). Odds show that the battle should proceed along the lines of Brazil vs Great Britain.
