Although the top two spots appear to be falling in to the familiar grasps of Chelsea and Manchester United, the battle for fourth place and a Champions League spot is turning into an incredibly intriguing battle.
Top of the Table
Chelsea are the favourites in the outright Premier League betting where they are priced up at 8/11 with Man Utd available at 2/1. The key to this season and the resting place of the 2009/10 Premier Legaue title will be the month of January when Chelsea lose key players like Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Solomon Kalou to the African Cup of Nations.
Liverpool remain the favourites to take fourth place in the league at around 11/10 but such is their dependence on both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres that there has to be value in taking them on. Tottenham, Aston Villa and Man City have all shown that they can mix it with the big boys this season but their true test will be whether or not they can keep up the pace for the duration of the season.
Relegation
At the bottom of the table there is still everything to play for. Portsmouth will need some significant investment if they are to avoid the drop this season in the Premier League, but they do have a supposed billionaire owner at hand who could provide that much needed cash injection.
Wolverhampton and Bolton do not have that luxury and could find themselves in serious trouble this year, they do not appear to have the quality required to stay afloat this season. Hull are another side who have struggled so far and the recent injury to key midfielder Jimmy Bullard has put them amidst the thick of a relegation battle. However it is Bolton at around 7/2 that are my Premier League tips for relegation.
Top Goalscorer
Dider Drogba’s January absence makes him an impossible back in the top goal scorer market at around the 3/1 mark. Jermain Defoe currently tops the goal scoring charts and in a World Cup year he along with Gabriel Agbonlahor at 4/1 and 50/1 respectively are my Premier League picks for the top goal scorer market.
