OldTrafford

The English Premier League is arguably the best domestic football league in the world. It is certainly the richest, and although England's rich football history goes back to the invention of the game itself, the Premier League only came into existence in 1992, forming as seperate entity from the English professional football league.

It was this move, and the enormous investment from satellite TV giant Sky, that have contributed to the league's increased success, but also to an unshackled spiralling of costs both for owners and fans.

Premiership Champions

The league was reduced to 20 teams a couple of years into its existence, and has seen five different champions. Fortyfive clubs have competed in the Premiership since its inception, with the most successful team being Manchester United, claiming 12 titles, Arsenal and Chelsea are both tied on three, while Blackburn Rovers and now Manchester City can boast one each.

European Qualification

Clubs in the Premier League compete not only for the title itself, but also for the highly valued prize of qualification for either the Champions League or the Europa League. The top 4 clubs at the end of the season earn a place in the following season's Champions League, with the top 3 gaining automatic entry to the group stage.

The club finishing in 5th earns entry to the Europa League, with clubs qualification for clubs finishing 6th and 7th dependant upon the winners of the two domestic league cup competitions, the FA Cup and League Cup.

Relegation and Promotion

The clubs finishing in the bottom three positions on the table at the conclusion of the 38 match season, are relegated back to the 2nd tier of English football, the Championship, formerly known as 2nd Division. At the same time, the top two clubs from the Championship are granted automatic promotion to the Premier League while a third wins promotion via a playoff series between clubs positioned third to sixth.
