Holloway all the way

Stuck on plans for stadium expansion it does look like Blackpool have all the intentions of making their stay in the Premier League a permanent one. Their new additions have not been as indicative towards that ambition though but it is manager Holloway’s charisma and the courage he will be able to transmit to his players that should serve as backbone for this team.

Coach: Holloway

Tactics: 4-3-3

Players In: Grandin, Basham, Cathcart, Sylvestre, Keinan, Campbell, Phillips, Carney, Kingson

Players Out: Burgess

Current Probable Formation: Gilks, Baptiste, Evatt, Cathcart, Crainey, Adam, D. Vaughan, Carney, Taylor-Fletcher, Varney, Ormerod

Last season’s sixth position in the Championship and their consequent promotion after laboring through the playoffs cannot but remind of Hull City’s fairy tale. They surprised in earning promotion and this characteristic of theirs should be their major weapon as they approach a tough season at the heights of the Premier League.

What manager Holloway would want his players to keep in mind with regards to this parallelism with Hull City is the latter’s downfall in the second part of the season, just after promotion. After a great start which included unexpected wins at the Emirates and at White Hart Lane the Tigers had to hold on by the skin of their teeth to save themselves a quick return to the Championship with just one point difference from 18th placed Newcastle. In that second part of the season they had lost 16 games out of 21 since mid-December. Will it be a repeat of that movie for the Tangerines?

The team sure does look full of anonymous players. New arrivals Cathcart, Campbell who is back from the loan to Leicester, Carney and Grandin should go straight into the first team boosting what did look like a so-so side even for the Championship. The club debts, however, prevent any top club reject signings that would surely help the side with their experience and perhaps superior technical abilities. They do have their own creative man though in Adam and for his capabilities he is one of the most recognized players on the team.

Moving on to a prohibitive number in football such as 34 years, with reference to the age of Ormerod, the veteran forward is still one who can give a good contribution to the team. He will be required to beat the competition of loan recall DJ Campbell, who is five years younger, Harewood, three years younger, and Varney, six years younger, but despite his past with rivals Preston North End he is one of the crowd favourites and will not be sitting on the bench for too long. Taylor-Fletcher and newcomer Grandin are other strikes enrolled with Blackpool, making competition for places quite hot. Nonetheless, Holloway’s attacking approach makes it possible for three to be fielded at the same time so there should be space for many of them as they go along. Given the amount of work asked for by the manager the forwards are also subbed often throughout the match, especially those employed on wider positions.

When all is said and done, however, the main man for the Seasiders will definitely be the manager Holloway. He may be one of the most outspoken managers around but he does know how to keep the team together. Team spirit is his specialty and even though this may at times involve proclaiming club president Oyston as the common enemy he does keep the boat afloat in some way or another.

Predicted finishing position: 17th

The manager’s characteristics and the team’s attacking stance will make up for the lack of technical abilities when compared to Premier League competition and help them surprise many sides that will be taking the Tangerines lightly. Nonetheless, opposition will probably soon understand the mechanics behind Blackpool and when the right measures are employed they should struggle Hull-style to get the points required to stay up.
