Few changes for a winning group

The club’s new policy has allowed for only a few new signings but with Hughton’s excellent man management skills the young team can be the Premier League’s surprise coming right up from the Championship.
Coach: Hughton
Tactics: 4-3-3
Players In: Sol Campbell, Ben Arfa, D. Gosling, Tiote, Perch
Players Out: Lualua, Forster
Current Probable Formation: Harper, Perch, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Barton, Nolan, Tiote, Gutierrez, Ben Arfa, Carroll
Despite the signing of Sol Campbell, who is 36 this year, the Magpies have set their sights on young lads that can mature at the club whilst contributing to their success before attracting a big club’s attention. Mike Ashley’s aim is not one to get spending large sums in an unreasonable manner just to chase an improbable place in Europe. Newcastle look like a team that know what their possibilities are and will not unbalance themselves on anything other than securing themselves a place in the top flight for another year.
The Magpies’ wisdom in handling the promotion to the highest division and manager Hughton’s ability at keeping his young lads’ feet firmly on the ground can prove the right formula for a successful season for their standards.
Most of the newcomers will be reinforcing the side by going
straight into Hughton’s first team plans. Campbell, despite being an old flame
of the manager since their days at Tottenham,
should be one to play second
fiddle to starting central defensive duo Coloccini and Williamson.
Ex-Nottingham Forest right-back Perch will be handed the role on the right and
if he sticks to what he did last year in the Championship he should improve the
quality of the Magpies’ defence. What Hughton will hope for is for fewer
injuries for the English player who may be close to a call from the national
team in the near future. Spaniard Jose Enrique will not be displaced from his
position as left back.
The Spanish-speaking Gutierrez will be keeping his place in the first eleven side as well. He makes up for an important part of Newcastle’s offensive tactics being one of the few players capable of running with the ball and skipping past opponents. New signing Ben Arfa should hold similar characteristics in his game but that does not necessarily mean that one of them should be sitting on the bench as the other runs on the field. Moving each towards the flanks with the possibility of running towards the centre and the box will create enough space in between them in order not to see them step on each other’s toes.
These tactics will require that Nolan be utilized more for
his energetic approach to the game rather than his abilities in front of goal.
He is one of those all-round players who has also managed to find his touch in
front of last season after a long period of drought by scoring a total of 17 goals in the league. His retracting towards the centre of the midfield will
help provide for a good ball handler for the team in the centre of the pitch
whilst preventing overcrowding in attack. He can be flanked by Tiote, Barton,
Smith or Routledge, with the latter also capable of covering for wingmen
Gutierrez and Ben Arfa. Gosling, signed on from Everton, will keep the club
waiting as he nurses a knee ligament injury that will be keeping him on the
sidelines up until some day around January.
The first option in attack will be 21-year old Carroll. In Hughton’s 4-3-3, with a strong striker required upfront in order to finish off Gutierrez’s and Ben Arfa’s assists or to bring down the ball for the wide men and Nolan coming in from behind, Carroll is the ideal man to spearhead the Magpies’ striking force. Ameobi will be his number one sub with Lovenkrands and Xisco hoping for a chance when one of the starters is unavailable.
Harper carries the number one shirt on his shoulders with young Dutch keeper Krul his second and the even younger Swedish goalkeeper Soderberg the third choice.
Predicted finishing position: 11th
Newcastle is a squad built with good judgment and involving a mixture of experience and youth that Hughton will most likely be able to blend into a winning combination. Just fresh from promotion they will not be expected to march straight into Europe ahead of stronger sides like Everton or Manchester City but they can surprise a good number of teams, especially when playing in front of a fantastic home crowd numbering close to the 50,000.
