Mel Brittain's reliable Carragold is fancied to land Beverley's featured Remember John "mother" Hubbard Handicap at 3.30 this afternoon.
The 6-y-o enjoyed a very productive season in 2011 and is better than ever this year, winning at this course over a mile and in the frame on all his other starts. He shaped well when fourth to Edmaaj at York last time out and that form has been boosted several times since. Duran Fentimann is back in the saddle and the recent rain easing conditions is very much in his favour and possibly against the principal dangers.
Count Bertoni represents the shrewd David O'Meara yard and hinted 21 days ago at Redcar that he is ready to return to winning form from a slipping rating. However, the 5-y-o has avoided soft ground all his career and it must be a huge doubt as to whether he will get home at this testing track unless the ground dries out appreciably through the day.
A bigger threat for the £7,000 prize money may come from the 4-y-o King of the Celts. Tim Easterby's versatile type showed fair form over hurdles during the winter, and shaped as if capable of exploiting a career-low mark in this sphere when third over course and distance last time out. He was well outpaced before staying on strongly up the hill then, and may need at least 1m4f plus these days or at least a very positive frontrunning ride from Tom Eaves.
Gold Rules appears as a potential "plot" when the market speaks for the shrewd Mick Easterby yard. He was a dual winner for Luca Cumani in 2010, but has run up a string of disappointing efforts since. It is possible to excuse both runs this season (went off far too fast last time), and there is no denying he features on a potentially lenient mark if able to recapture his former sparkle.
Pintrada folded very tamely and finished tailed off 33 days ago so has a lot to prove now, while Iulus failed to land a poor seller last time out and connections now reach for the eyeshield as a last resort.
In summary, a gilt edged chance for Carragold to get back on the scoresheet at a course where he has an excellent record. At around 6-4 this morning he is worth a decent win investment.
