Sir Michale Stoute's consistent and classy Sea Moon is a confident selection to land this afternoon's featured Ormonde Stakes at Chester.
The 4-y-o has won or been placed in all six career starts, and performed with credit last season in both the Group 1 St Leger and latterly when runner-up when venturing over the to Churchill Downs in November. He is sure to be readied for this valuable Group 3 prize and the recent easing of the ground is sure to bring his proven stamina into play up the straight under Ryan Moore.
Main danger comes from old foe Brown Panther. He represents the up-and-coming in-form Tom Dascombe yard, and was a real standard bearer for the stable last term, winning three quality staying prizes and finishing a very creditable second in the Doncaster classic on his final run (one place ahead of our selection there). He handles cut in the ground and has winning form at this uniquely tight, turning course, however it could be argued his best efforts are on a faster surface and Sea Moon may just have the edge first time out.
Memphis Tennessee returns after 320 days on the sidelines, but seems unlikely to need the run given Aidan O'Brien's superb record at this meeting. He made the frame in both the English and Irish Derby's last season, shaping on each occasion as though a stiffer test of stamina would be well within his compass, and it will be very interesting to see his strength in the betting near the off this afternoon. The prospect of an uncontested lead would make him a very interesting contender, as both the market principals are usually given patient rides.
Vivacious Vivienne and Calico Cat are both hopelessly outclassed in this three-cornered affair.
In summary, a fascinating tactical battle between three high class stayers. Sea Moon is uncomplicated, proven on the ground and can quicken away in the closing stages if getting the breaks. At around 6-4 this morning he is well worth a substancial win investment.
