racing preview

Humbie won readily over hurdles last time out and can make a smooth transition to the larger obstacles to land the John Smith's Handicap Chase at Kelso.

Pauline Robson's 8-y-o is a lightly-raced gelding, winning a handicap chase at Carlisle last autumn and over hurdles at this course last time out following five months on the sidelines. He won very smoothly that day and can gets on very well with Timmy Murphy who is back in the saddle again for this £12,000 prize.

Main danger in a wide open contest comes from Badger Foot. Lucinda Russell's 7-y-o has slipped back down to a mark below his last winning rating, and shaped on a few occasions recently that he is ready to return to form. He will relish the drying ground and the stable has had a fantastic month.

Rockabilly makes the long journey north from the Nigel Twiston Davies yard and is a useful stayer when his jumping holds up. He looked sure to go very close at Perth last time out before taking a heavy fall, and he is sure to be thereabouts if his confidence is unaffected.

Inverlochy Lad is a former point-to-point winner who was two from two over fences at this course last season, most recently scoring in a novice at this trip. He found plenty for pressure there having come off the bridle earlier than most, and has leading claims having not stayed 3m7f at Perth last time.

Ballycolin goes well on fast ground with his only more effort coming when the ground rode very deep. He won well at Musselburgh in November and showed this rating was within his compass when a creditable runner-up at Newcastle 57 days ago.

At a bigger price More Equity seems sure to go well from the front reunited with Ryan Mania. He loves it round here and has not been seen to best effect recently under hold-up tactics over hurdles.

Overyou seems in the handicappers grip after a consistent spell while Night in Milan is a very quirky type who's attitude holds him back in a finish.

In summary, a really tough handicap chock full of in-form types. Humbie has not stood much racing but is a smooth traveller who will appreciate the forecast good ground. At around 6-1 this morning he is fair each-way value in a quality contest fot the level.
