Luca Cumani's new inmate Bezique is fancied to improve for her seasonal debut and land Leicester's Charnwood Forest Fillies' Conditions Stakes at 4.30.
The 4-y-o is an ex-Italian filly who won a 1m listed event at Milan in 2011 for Marco Gasparini. She has not come near that level since, including on her debut for this yard in York handicap eleven days ago, but this faster surface seems sure to suit and the booking of Kieran Fallon encourages that she is ready to bounce back to form in a weak race for the £12,500 prize money.
Main danger comes from the Saeed Bin Suroor trained Dysphonia. The 6-y-o was formerly based in Australia where she won a decent listed contest last year. She has run with credit without winning recently (including in midfield in Group 1 company), and her third in a 7f Lingfield Group 3 is just about the best piece of recent form on offer.
Mortitia has clearly not been easy to train as she has appeared very infrequently in the last year, and she was tailed off when well behind Dysphonia last time out. The filly now has questions to answer and is best watched despite the Brian Meehan yard coming into top form in the past week.
Nevaeh has proven race-fitness and well being on her side and may outrun her price given the frailties at the top of the market. She was a fair runner-up twice in 6f polytrack maidens in March, and the trip was plainly inadequate on her recent turf debut.
In summary, a below par renewal of a contest that has often attracted some star names. Bezique was unfancied in a warm York handicap on her debut for new connections and duly finished well held, but possibly this firmer surface will suit and she may possess the best tactical speed in a race without an obvious pacemaker. At around 5-1 this morning she appears better value than the odds-on favourite and is worth a small win investment.
