Michael Bell's consistent Set to Music is selected to land Newbury's British Stallion Studs E.b.f. Chalice Stakes at 4.20 this afternoon.
The 4-y-o filly completed a four-timer in a valuable listed event at York last summer, and has returned as good as ever this season, gamely landing a listed race at Warwick before finishing a good third in the Lancashire Oaks last time out. She will relish the decent ground forecast and has Hayley Turner in the saddle for the first time since winning at Nottingham over a year ago.
Main danger for the £33,000 prize comes from Roger Varian's lightly raced Ambivalent. She has been successful on two of her four starts, running out a facile winner of a 1m2f handicap before showing useful form when third in listed race at Newmarket 15 days ago. The only issue surrounds her temperament with her trainer unusually reaching for a hood on both runs this term, however she may just lack concentration when coming under pressure rather than anything more sinister.
Khione improved dramatically on her debut effort in 2011 when winning a 1m Nottingham maiden and a 1m2f Newbury handicap (heavily backed and won with more in hand than the margin suggests) on both outings this year. She will relish this step up in trip and is certainly well worth a try in this grade.
Albamara stormed home in 1m Epsom maiden last summer and picked up her progressive thread when third in listed races on both runs this term. This extra trip will suit but the Sir Mark Prescott yard has not really got into gear this term and she is more exposed than most.
Roxy Flyer has a poor win record for one with so much ability and is hard to consider upped in class, while Naseem Alyasmeen was very disappointing when a onepaced fourth last time out and may be feeling the effects of a busy season.
In summary, a gilt edged opportunity for Set to Music to return to winning form despite having to give away 3lb and upwards to some useful rivals. At around 5-2 this morning she is well worth a medium sized win investment.
