Andre Fabre's top class Golden Lilac is selected to land Newmarket's featured Group 1 Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes at 3.00 this afternoon.
The Galileo filly has tasted defeat just once in seven starts in her native France, and created a deep impression when winning readily at Longchamp on her seasonal debut in May. Regular rider Maxime Guyon travels over for the ride and it will come as a major surprise if she is not a cut above some exposed rivals.
Main danger for the £160,000 prize money may come from Aidan O'Brien's Maybe. She raced unbeaten through a flawless juvenile campaign and was all the rage to get off to a winning start at three in the 1000 Guineas. However, the 13-8f was thumped ten lengths there by stablemate Homecoming Queen and the form has been let down several times since. Her fifth in the Oaks was a step back in the right direction and this drop back down in trip should suit with Ryan Moore replacing Joseph O'Brien.
Sir Henry Cecil's Chachamaidee has a consistent profile despite racing in a hood, and was very unlucky to be touched off by Joviality in the Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot. She got left around 5l at the start there, doing well to press hard inside the final furlong, and should be capable of reversing the form today. That was a very bunched and modest looking renewal where the entire field finished in something of a heap, and it would be no shock if all the principals there struggle in the future at Group level.
Giofra hails from the shrewd Alain de Royer-Dupre stable. She has been given a 75 day rest since finishing second in soft ground in April and is entitled to respect after just five career starts.
Lay Time and Barefoot Lady seem fully exposed and are held on several lines of form, while Siyouma hails from a French yard more associated with top class jumpers than Group winners.
In summary, a one sided looking contest with the highly regarded Golden Lilac well clear on official ratings on her first venture away from France. At around 5-4 this morning she warrants a maximum stakes investment to quicken clear from the furlong pole under ideal conditions.
