Sir Henry Cecil can land the Totepool Pontefract Castle Stakes at 3.40 this afternoon with his progressive stayer Jet Away.
The 5-y-o won a pair of 1m2f minor events last season and has already matched that tally in both his starts this year, latterly winning a warm listed race at Goodwood. He stays this longer trip and handles some cut in the ground so should be very hard to beat under Tom Queally, despite having to concede weight away all round.
Main danger for the £33,000 prize money comes from Richard Fahey's reliable Glens Diamond. He won his first two starts last term, including the Dee Stakes at Chester and made further improvement with an excellent second to Red Cadeaux in the Yorkshire Cup last time out. The 4-y-o is just as effective at this shorter trip and his stable continues in fantastic form.
Brown Panther was one of the most progressive horses of 2011, winning the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot and ending the campaign with an excellent second in St Leger. However, he ran very badly on his return when a well beaten last of four at Chester 44 days ago and has quite a bit too prove after that display. It may be that he, like so many others, failed to handle the deep ground that day and the yard enjoyed a welcome Group winner last week.
Lost in the Moment is a smart performer who has run with credit without winning recently. He shaped as if better for last month's seasonal debut (tired late on having travelled well), and this longer trip very much in his favour.
Qushchi has been well held in handicaps twice this season and appears well held as he steps up in class.
In summary, four of the five runners hold claims for this valuable listed prize, but Jet Away is far more prolific type than his rivals and can shrug off the penalty. At around 5-2 this morning he is reasonable value to give "team Frankel" another victory.
