James Fanshawe's progressive Grey Seal is a confident selection to land Yarmouth's Bet365.com Handicap at 3.40 this afternoon.
The 3-y-o filly improved for the fitting of a hood in modest 7f polytrack maidens this term and duly made light of a lenient opening mark when a ready winner at Wolverhampton last month. She should continue to progress and is an interesting contender back on the turf under Hayley Turner.
Main danger for the £3500 prize comes from the revitalised 6-y-o Hail Promenader. He came out of the wilderness with a game 1m win at Chepstow in May and put a subsequent flop behind him when second at Newmarket last time out. Paul Hanagan is an interesting booking for a small stable and he has won from much higher ratings in the past.
Saslong is another contender off a flyweight on handicap debut, especially as the Mark Johnston stable finally snapped an abysmal spell at Wolverhampton yesterday. The Zamindar colt made an encouraging start when a close runner-up at Southwell (1m) in December last year and turned in another good effort when fourth at Hamilton last month. He is open to more improvement now handicapping and is well worth a cautionary look in the market to gauge the strength behind him close to the off.
Topweight Whitby Jet is in good form at present, finishing in the frame for the third start in succession at Folkestone last month. He is a hold-up performer who always needs luck given how he's usually dropped out but should give another good account with Kieran Fallon in the saddle.
Patriotic comes from the Chris Dwyer yard that does well at this venue. He is the winner of four all-weather starts for his new connections this year, and showed his best recent turf effort when a good second over course and distance last month. The 4-y-o couldn't match that level in a better race at Newmarket last time but is entitled to respect once more, with the easing conditions sure to suit.
Calypso Magic is a frontrunner who has slumped in the weights after a poor season and needs to build on a slightly more encouraging third 9 days ago (poor form only), while Hereford Boy is very quirky and seems to have gone off the boil in his recent outings.
In summary, a very tight knit handicap, but Grey Seal is far less exposed than most and could be very well treated after impressing on the all-weather last time. At around 5-2 this morning she is worth a small win investment to carry on progressing.
