Driving the 49ers into the Superbowl is 49ers QB Alex Smith while the New York Giants have Eli Manning to fall back on. Both teams are just one win away from the real deal as a win here is rewarded with a trip to the Superbowl.
San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants
Sunday - 6:30 PM ET
San Francisco was expecting a showdown between themselves and Green Bay Packers but that isn’t going to happen as New York Giants surprised everyone with their place in the NFC Conference Final. The last time these two teams squared up in a title chaser was back in 1991 where the Giants took it under a tight affair. A repeat might not be on the cards.
The San Francisco 49ers are a tough tough team to crack and they fight for every inch of the field, offensively and defensively. It was a pretty good performance from the 49ers last weekend when they took the field at the Candlestick against the New Orleans Saints. The 36-32 win might look close but in reality it was won far more convincingly by the 49ers. Quarterback Alex Smith isn’t the most talked QB in the NFL but he does his job well and with Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree. All the rushing is left for Frank Gore to handle and that he does well. If you are looking for the real deal then the defense is the key to their victory. The 49ers were strong and just mean. They made the Saints turnover the ball five times and three of them were fumbles, while two were intercepted. They were all over the Saints last weekend and imagine what the Giants are facing this Sunday.
The New York Giants can hardly contain their excitement when they were on the way to beat one of the best teams in the NFL last weekend. For what it's worth, the New York Giants are definitely a contender for the Superbowl. They have delivered plenty of reasons why they should be here and that they are a worthy team in giving the 49ers a run for their money. All that needs to be done is QB Eli Manning showing what there is in that arm. Three touchdown passes against the Packers and the options of Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham all prepared to grab that opportunity when called upon. Runningbacks Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs will have to find top speed to get behind the 49ers defense. However, while the offense needs to get going the defense needs to tighten up a little bit, with Osi Umenyiora and Jason Pierre-Paul doing just that against the Packers and why wouldn’t they do it again. The Giants are definitely riding with the good form of the late and we all know that this could be a repeat of a certain year that they won the Superbowl. Things are just starting to up heat up for the Giants.
Verdict:
One emotional game between two teams that need a win to get into the Superbowl. Home advantage for the 49ers might not play that big of a part as the Giants perform well on the road particularly in the playoffs. This is going to be a right test for Eli Manning to see whether he can get past the 49ers defense. If he can then there is hope but if 49ers come out strong and scoring, time might not be on the Giant’s side. San Francisco 49ers to reach the Superbowl.
Obscure Stats - The Giants have covered the line in 20 of their last 28 away games against teams with a home win/loss record above 50%, while the 49ers have covered in 12 of their last 14 games as favourites.
