The champions Green Bay Packers, will take the field this weekend as favourites when the New York Giants visit on Sunday. The winner will go on to the conference final and will the winner when the San Franvisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints meet up on Saturday.
San Francisco 49ers vs. New Orleans Saints
Saturday - 4:30 PM ET
Two of the best offensive teams in the NFL will go head to head at Candlestick Park where the San Francisco 49ers have the home advantage. This is the Divisional playoff and winner will go on to the Conference Final next weekend. The 49ers have the luxury of getting a weekend off during the wild card playoffs, so most of the players are more than ready to get things going once again. Their last appearance in a playoff was back in 2002 and the year 2012 could be the start of a new era that the 49ers will enjoy. In 2011, the 49ers finishd the regular season with a 13-3 record with the future looking promising under the helm of Jim Hargaugh. He has and will unleash QB Alex Smith and get the ball to both wide receiver Michale Crabtree and tight end Vernon Davis. Don’t forget, their running backs are also a potent weapon with Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter who can both score on the ground. The 49ers are 7-1 at home, their only loss was in Week 2 when the Dallas Cowboys came for a visit and with that in mind, defeat is a distance memory for some players.
The New Orleans Saints are very much on a mission and witnessing the destruction of the Detroit Lions with a 45-28 win, they are clearly one a good run. Head coach Sean Payton showed bravery in his tactics and shows great discretion when taking risks. No introduction is needed for QB Drew Brees who was unstoppable with 466 yards and his wide receivers having a great day. That of course, combined with Darren Sproles with TD runs, these guys are showing that they are the team to beat. It will be the first time these two teams meet this season and with statistics on their side. The Saints are undefeated since Week 8 and have also won six straight games against the 49ers and haven’t lost to them since 2001. This will be a great occasion for Drew Bees to face one of the best linebackers in the NFL and matching him could give them that ticket to the next round.
Verdict:
Dreaming of the Conference Final, both teams have a good chance to make it but the Saints have that little advantage through experience and maybe also the momentum. However, there is always that saying, in with the new, out with the old, so the 49ers will be gunning for it with Alex Smith, but Drew Brees is the better option. Saints to win on the road.
Obscure Stats - New Orleans have covered in just 4 of their last 14 January games, while the 49ers have covered in 18 of their last 27 home games.
Green Bay Packers vs. New York Giants
Sunday – 4:30 PM ET
The defending champion Green Bay Packers, are looking to set a few records straight after going 15-1 in the regular season. The only blip came away from home against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15 but then again, they did use QB Aaron Rodgers on a part time basis and it is really the defense that needs a bit more attention. The question is really whether they need to have a look at this in the playoffs because they are definitely shielding it with the offensive scoring every game and every quarter. The Packers do give up yards and passes but it’s the result that matters at the end of the day. If you look at Week 13 where they clashed with the Giants in New York with a 38-35 win, then the Packers have that advantage over their guests this Sunday.
The Giants are feeling the pressure as they face yet another opposition with high calibre but this time it will be the reigning champion. They had a good solid win over the Atlanta Falcons with a score line of 24-2. That demonstrates that the Giants have sorted out their defense record and if you take the last three games then they have only given up 30 points, averaging just 10 points per game. It's a good stat to go into a game against the Packers with, who were one of the most high scoring teams in the NFL during the regular season. It will be a battle between the offense and defense, but the Giant’s offense can give the Packers a run for their money when it comes to passing yards with Quarterback Eli Manning. He will have both wide receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks available on the day. More impressively it is Eli Manning that is doing the job and maybe there is still something in him to take back the MVP title from Rodgers.
Verdict:
The Giants have lost three on the road but going into this game, they have won three straight as they travel to Wisconsin. The Green Bay Packers are undefeated at home and with the team being rested during the wild card playoffs, think they might just come back stronger from the rest, imagine that. Tight game but I can’t see the Packers falling apart.
Obscure Stats - The Giants have covered in just 4 of their last 16 games played on grass, while Green Bay have covered in 23 of their last 33 games played on grass.
