Patriots vs. Giants

The Road to Super Bowl XLVI is a showdown just like the one in 2007, where both the New England Patriots and New York Giants will go head to head to find out who will win the Lombardi trophy. The Giants pipped it back in 2007 but will 2012 be a repeat?

New England Patriots vs. New York Giants

The Dream ends here if the NFL is your sport. The two teams that will be competing in Super Bowl XLVI are from the East coast, the New England Patriots and New York Giants, both of whom will seek to impose their competitive edge over the other in Indianapolis. The stadium will be packed, like every year, and on Sunday 5th of February, all hell is going to break loose as we will witness New England Patriots vs. New York Giants part II - The Rematch.

We all know what happened in 2007 when these two teams met. The New England Patriots were favourites but Superbowl XLII slipped away from them in the dying seconds and denied them their fourth Lombardi trophy. So fast-forward to 2012 and the Patriots have yet another chance to pick up their fourth Superbowl and won’t head coach Bill Belichick be happy with the legacy of bringing a fourth ring to New England. Belichick and QB Tom Brady will set the record of being the first coach and quarterback to reach five Superbowls. Certainly, the success of the Patriots has got something to do with Tom Brady and his passing skills. After an indifferent AFC Championship game, where he threw 2 interceptions and no touchdowns, Brady will look to get back to his old ways. If he does, then there might be no stopping him in Indianapolis. Wes Welker will have to show better form than what he did against the Ravens and he will need Tight End due of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez to contribute early and set up a decisive advantage, or in other words, finishing their opposition off in the first half. Making the most of it shouldn’t be a problem for running back Benjarvus Green-Ellis as he showed more heart last time out. This is a team that has the experience and should be able to learn from their mistakes of 4 seasons ago, to boost their confidence they know their defence worked against the Ravens, however will that work on the Giants? This is just one of many questions as the Patriots roll into Indianiapolis, as they know the Giants have already toppled them once in the regular season.

The New York Giants ended the regular season with a 9-7 record and it is impressive to see a team with record of 9-7 reach the Super Bowl. If they win on Sunday then the Giants will be the first team in NFL history to win with a regular season 9-7 record. A similar situation back in 2007, although not as bad. The Giants have been on the road during playoffs except for their opening playoff against Atlanta. Time after time, they come up with big plays and surprise everyone around them. Against all odds, the Giants are the NFC representative in the SuperBowl and they face a foe that they know well so well. In Week 9 of the regular season they defeated the Patriots 24-20. That win ended the Patriot’s 20 game home winning streak and that should be a psychological advantage going into the game on Sunday, not to mention the 2007 win itself. Quarterback Eli Manning knows that he could be the hero once again, he beat the Patriots in Week 9 without wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, running back Ahmad Bradshaw, rookie fullback Henry Hynoski and center David Baas. This time around, they are all back to strengthen the team and surely 49ers, Packers and Cowboys all know too well how well the form that the Giants have ended the season with. This good form of the late shows that there is a great understanding amongst the team and that’s hats off to head coach Tom Coughlin. One more match to go and the Giants will be writing history once again.

Verdict:

This isn’t as straight forward as it seems but the New England Patriots are favourites. This is because of their offensive prowess and their ability to score touchdowns at any moment all season long. Their worst score line this season was 17 on the road against the Steelers and the Ravens held them at 23. This is one game that we all know the Patriots need to come out all guns blazing and taking a big lead will be crucial. As for the Giants, they should be proud of their defensive record and they proved it when they faced the mighty 49ers and held them into overtime. This is a team that is looking better and better by the day and that self belief is something that can’t be taken away from you overnight. However, the Patriots must be very hungry for that trophy and in retrospect the Giants did pip them in the dying second in 2007, something that will be remembered by the Patriots.

No matter what happens, this is going to be one of the most exciting match up and it could even go into overtime even with a under 60 points score. In terms of picking the team to win, it will have to be the Patriots because they are an offensive team that wants to score, that is a good reason why they have the slight advantage. But once gain, underestimating the Giants could leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. So go for a low scoring and a three point gap between the two teams in the end result.
