Week 13 - Winning Streaks, Losing Streaks

Packers vs. Giants

There are winners and then there are losers, one way or another, they will be remembered for their worth. The Green Bay Packers travel to New York to take on the Giants with their 100% winning record, while the Indianapolis Colts could maintain their losing streak against the New England Patriots. Monday Night football will see the Jags take on the Chargers.

New England Patriots vs. Indianapolis Colts

The positive vibe in the Patriots camp is back and the reality of the playoffs isn’t far off. Their third consecutive wins after beating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-20 on the road showed more commitment and determination in their plays. Head coach Bill Belichick is still a bit weary with the Indianapolis Colts and he won’t let his guard down. Therefore another big game from BenJarvus Green-Ellis in the rushing department could just do the trick on Sunday.

What is the opposite of winning? Well that is easy, losing and no other team has done it the way that the Indianapolis Colts shown this season. 11 defeats and more misery is coming their way as they travel East this weekend. The major reason of the Colt’s horrible season is due to their first choice quarterback Peyton Manning out with a serious injury. He is due for a scan and yet further rehabilitation is due to be needed. There are a few players that can carry the team like Dwight Freeney and Reggie Wayne but still a far cry from their glory days of years past.

Verdict: This could be a crushing defeat for the Colts, Brady to continue his good form so Patriots to win.

Obscure Stat - The Patriots are -21 favourites heading into this match. There have only been 3 lines higher in NFL history, with the favourite winning on each occasion, but failing to cover the line each time.

New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers

The hopes were there but now it is dashing away for the New York Giants. The home side suffered yet another defeat last Monday Night to the New Orleans Saints on the road. A 49-24 defeat for the Giants seeing them eyeing their third straight defeat and with five games left in the regular season, a playoff place looks very much a tight affair. Playing against the defending champion should either spur them on to get a good result or fall short like other teams that have come before the Packers. Either way, the passing game looks like the only weapon the Giants can fall upon, both QB Eli Manning and wide receiver Victor Cruz helping out the score line.

Noticing something with the Packers, well, if Colts can’t stop losing then the Packers can’t stop winning. A lot of questions are pouring out to see whether the reigning champion can go all the way to the playoffs without losing. Their latest victory came on the road against the Detroit Lions with 27-15, pretty much holding off the Packers getting into scoring over the 30 points. The Packers are still on the road but does it really matter whether it is a home or away game, certainly not, because QB Aaron Rodgers will keep on throwing those TDs passes.

Verdict: Tricky one at the MetLife Stadium but can you really doubt the Packers not winning?

Obscure Stat - The Packers are 2-6 against the line in their last 8 games played in Week 13 of the season, while the Giants have covered the line in each of their 6 last games played in Week 13.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. San Diego Chargers

Monday Night will see two teams that are suffering from a change of fortune in the regular season. For the home team, Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t managed to gear themselves into winning more than three games but of course that is better than the Colt’s standard. Having said that they are going to face a team who is in a similar situation but only better by one more win that the Jaguars. The San Diego Chargers must be looking to their left and right to see what is really going on with them, after a good start to the regular season with a four out of five wins but only to follow by six straight defeats, latest against the Denver Broncos in OT with 16-13. This is a team in a slump and QB Phillip Rivers just hasn’t been able to deal with the pressure. Turmoil would be best suited for both teams.

Verdict: Jaguars firing their head coach is just one thing topping the Chargers, so San Diego to win just for being a less turbulent team.

Obscure Stat - The Jags have covered the line in just 16 of their last 51 games played on grass while San Diego have covered in just 2 of their last 11 away games as favourites.
