Week 14 - Time to Secure the Playoffs

Packers vs. Raiders

The Green Bay Packers are looking on par for the Superbowl but the Oakland Raiders might give them a run for their money in Week 14. Playoffs are already in sight for the Packers but the Raiders are still trying to secure their place and that also goes for the Detroit Lions taking on the Minnesota Vikings. On Monday Night, the Seattle Seahawks will be on national TV hosting the St. Louis Rams

Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings

This is crunch time for the Lions as they host the struggling Vikings on Sunday at Ford Field. The goal is to make the playoffs and they aren’t that far away if they manage to win their last four games of the regular season. Since the defeat to the San Franciso 49ers in Week 6, the Detroit Lions have been inconsistent in their form with only 2 wins out of seven games - a bit of a crisis compared to their five straight wins at the beginning of the season. Before facing the Vikings, the Lions have suffered two straight defeats and against the New Orleans Saints, they were ousted early in the game and didn’t find their composure. They are hoping that the tides will change this weekend and only QB Matthew Stafford can get the job done as long as Calvin Johnson can find space to receive his passes on Saturday.

The season has ended for the Vikings, down and out with an overall record of 2-10. Surely something needs to be done and this is the period where they are rebuilding for next season. QB Christian Ponder is preferred to Donovan McNabb which might have caught a few eyebrows in the past, but this young QB is certainly getting some experience under his belt. He is forging a partnership with both Percy Harvin and Michael Jenkins, but Vikings are doing better rushing the ball than throwing it. They are expected to struggle against Detroit and with four straight defeats, another one is slowly creeping along.

Verdict: The offensive play from Stafford and Johnson should be able to blow off the Vikings.

Obscure Stat - Minnesota have covered the line in 4 of their last 16 December games, while Detroit have covered the line in 1 of their last 6 games within the NFC.

Green Bay Packers vs. Oakland Raiders

That was a close one last weekend for the Packers. A road trip 38-35 win over the New York Giants but an overall record 12-0 in the regular season just makes things look good. NFC North Champions will have to think a bit closely whether to try out some new plays and tactics as there are only four games to go. Surely, QB Aaron Rodgers showed that he can do what he needs to do when the team needs yards and downs. His quick five-play drive led to set up the field goal so the Packers can rally to win games in the most crucial moments. Packers CB Charles Woodson suffered a concussion and he might be doubtful for Sunday but one thing is not missing, the winning ambition. Winning off the pitch has got Erik Walden in trouble as he is charged with misdemeanor discorderly conduct in domestic abuse, he could be out for 90 days in convicted.

The Raiders have four games to go in order to secure a spot in the playoffs, they are currently 7-5 and fighting for one spot with Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans and New York Jets. The Oakland Raiders will need to win the rest of their matchups and starting with the Green Bay Packers could present some heavy obstacle ahead of them. They go to Lambeau Field with a bitter taste in their mouth as last weekend's 34-14 defeat to the Miami Dolphins must have hit hard on the team after enjoying three straight wins. The Raiders were down 34-0 before QB C. Palmer threw two TDs, so that was a certain blow in their quest in secure a playoff spot as the Packers is next up.

Verdict: 18 undefeated games, 12 in the regular season, another win for the Packers at home.

Obscure Stat - Oakland have covered the line in 20 of their last 62 December games, while Green Bay have covered in 22 of their last 30 following a game in which they collected less than 90 yards rushing.

Seattle Seahawks vs. St. Louis Rams

Monday Night returns with the Seattle Seahawks trying to find their winning ways in search of a playoff spot against the St. Louis Rams. They have every right to be excited as their last home game saw the Seahawks beating the Philadelphia Eagles 31-14, a bounce back from the week before when they went down to the Washington Redskin 23-17. A win over the Rams can spiral into a good post season for the Seahawks as running back Marshawn Lynch is about to explode once again. This is his fourth time in his last five games running for at least 100 yards and with that information, the Seahawks are likely to use this advantage to get that W.

The Rams hit an all time low last weekend in their road trip to San Francisco. Losing has been a norm with the St. Louis Rams and with 10 defeats, that is your good bet that Monday Night won’t be a Rams Night. Having said that, the Rams failed to score last weekend against the 49ers as it finished 26-0. So another road trip and most likely Rams DE Chris Long is the only one that has a good record with a sack in the last six straight games. However, that won’t help if the offensive side of the ball can’t score or even at the very least, the special teams for a field goal.

Verdict: Seahawks making it easy with Marshawn Lynch doing the running and scoring.

Obscure Stat - St.Louis have covered the line in 3 of their last 16 games following a loss of at least 14 points, while Seattle have covered in 3 of their last 29 games following a win of at least 14 points.
