The time has come fort the teams that want life after the regular season and those that don't with one last week to fight for a spot in the playoffs. The New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys will get their showdown on Sunday while the New York Jets will face the Miami Dolphins. Elsewhere, the Oakland Raiders are also in it for a shout against the San Diego Chargers.
New Year 2012 - Week 17
We go into the last game of the regular season in the NFL with the usual excitement of who will be getting a wildcard birth. It's all to play for. A quick snapshot of the teams who are still in for the hunt for a wildcard and there's only two sports are available in each conference.
So still in the hunt to make the playoffs.
[AFC] Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets
[NFC] Dallas Cowboys
Oakland Raiders vs. San Diego Chargers
Besides needing a win over the San Diego Chargers, the Oakland Raiders also need some help in order to claim a wildcard spot. The Raiders can clinch the AFC West with a win but the Denver Broncos will need to lose their game, otherwise a wildcard could be in place if the Bengals lose and the Titans or Bengals lose and the New York Jets win. If all teams ends up with a 9-7 overall record from the Bengals, Titans, Bengals and Raiders then Oakland will be seeded 6th in the playoff basing on their winning margins per games during the regular season. Complicated, well, yeah, it is, but one thing is for certain needs to be done and that is a home win over the San Diego Chargers. Their road trip 16-13 win over Kansas City Chiefs in OT last weekend kept the Raiders playoff hopes alive and credit will have to go to wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey who showed his worth beating the Chief’s defense to give way for the OT field goal. Both QB Carson Palmer and running back D. Moore will have to do more against the Chargers.
The Chargers have already played their part in this the 2011-2012 NFL edition. Their last game could spoil the fun for the Raiders who are desperate for a win over them. The Chargers could have had a shot of making the playoffs if only they had beaten the Detroit Lions last weekend on their road trip. But the Lions proved too much for San Diego and they had to lick their wounds with a 38-10 defeat. So the Chargers are finishing yet another season with hopes unfulfilled.
Verdict: A battle of the West Coast teams and surely, the Raiders will do whatever it takes to make it to the wildcard round. A home win sounds just right.
Obscure Stats - San Diego have covered the betting line just once in their last 9 games following a loss, while Oakland have covered in just 4 of their last 18 games at home as favourites.
Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets
The least chance of all the teams to make the wildcard spot, the New York Jets have themselves only to blame for ending up in this dire situation. They hit back to back defeats against both the Philadelphia Eagles and most recently rivals, New York Giants. Both defeats have spiraled their playoff hopes to see that their fate is not in their hands any longer. Head coach Rex Ryan will have to look at his defense and seeing that it has being optimal all regular season, coming into the final game against Dolphins, they will have step up in this department. There is a lot of asking for the Jets, as they will have to win their road trip game over the Dolphins and need the Titans, Raiders, Broncos and Bengals all losing.
Not much can be said about the Dolphins as they finish bottom of the AFC East. They have being struggling all season and now they face Jets yet again, it also looks likely an unlikely win as last time they were crushed 25-6 back in Week 6. They could make life tough for the Jets on Sunday but in reality the Dolphins will be losing one of the legendary player, Jason Taylor, NFL’s top sack specialists of all time as he has called time in his career. Good news are that Jake Long and Brandon Marshall were selected for the Pro Bowl.
Verdict: Need to look into the heaven for help as the Jet’s will do what they need to do to get the at win at Miami, however a win might not be enough for them to release that wild card for the Jets.
Obscure Stats - Miami have covered the line in just 9 of their last 39 home games as favourites, while the Jets have covered in 7 of their last 8 visits to Miami.
New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys
Simple maths for this one, the Giants and Cowboys are competing for the one wild card spot on offer. The Cowboys travel to New York with fate in their hands as a win will give them that last NFC wildcard spot and also clinching the NFC East. QB Tony Romo, bruised hand, will need to step up his game and it is also about containing the Giant’s running game. If the Cowboys are able to keep that line tidy then Dallas will be able to concentrate in picking up the points which will be the key to winning this game.
The Giants showed no mercy with their win over the Jets 29-14 last weekend. This team can play, both offensively and defensively and another demonstration on this could be displayed on Sunday to defend their position for the wild card playoffs. The NFC East title showdown at the MetLife Stadium will need Eli Manning to come once again big in the most vital game of their season. There will be some offensive changes and Victor Cruz is determine to make it happen on Sunday night. Osi Umenyiora, wide receiver Mario Manningham and tight end Jake Ballard are all doubtful to play on Sunday.
Verdict: The Cowboys are 0-3 on Sunday night and that might give the edge for Giants since they beat the Cowboys 37-34 just in Week 14. For all the marbles, the Giants can do it and they should do it with some confidence
Obscure Stat - Dallas have covered the line in 7 of their last 8 games as underdogs, while the Giants have failed to cover in each of their last 5 games as favourites.
