NFL London is back and this time the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are taking center stage as the home team taking on the Chicago Bears this Sunday. Elsewhere, the New York Jets are trying to get back to winning ways against the San Diego Chargers while Monday Night Football will see the Baltimore Ravens travel to Jacksonville facing off with the Jaguars.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Chicago Bears
The annual event where London, England plays hosts to a regular season game of the NFL and of all the cream of the crop, both Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the chosen ones. The Buccaneers arrived in London six days before the game due to their last experience in London and their issues with the time difference. They are the only team to have returned to London, losing previously. Their cheerleaders will certainly give the Bucs the feel that this is a home game but the London crowd will almost certainly go with whatever they are presented. Tampa Bay should be able to entertain the European crowd easily as their form suggests that they are favorites to take this home win. They bounced back last weekend with a 26-20 win over New Orleans Saints after a humiliating defeat to the San Francisco 49ers the week before, losing 48-3. Top of the NFC South, the Buccaneers are still trying to improve their defensive play but offensively, they’ve got things going with QB Josh Freeman throwing well to Preston Parker while running back LeGarrette Blount has 328 yards with 3 TDs.
This game is technically an away game for the Chicago Bears and it will be their first game in Wembley Stadium. The team has decided to arrive in London on Friday and so getting through the jet-lag must be an issue for the Bears. There is one thing that the Bears won’t need to worry about and that is scoring TDs. They were pretty solid at the back with free flowing offense in their 39-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings last weekend, making their overall record 3-3. Their star player has to be QB Jay Cutler who can make a difference for them, but without Matt Forte, scoring TDs might not come that easily. Forte could well be the factor between winning and lose.
Verdict: Evenly matched but Bears have Forte, but Tampa Bay has the home game advantage, which London favors the “home” team.
New York Jets vs. San Diego Chargers
This could be the way back for the New York Jets as they face another Superbowl aspirant at MetLife Stadium. They were unraveled before their win over the Dolphins 24-6 last weekend as a slump of three straight defeats were met by a humble win for Head coach Rex Ryan. The win was a bit of an ugly affair and without much spark from QB Mark Sanchez, it was Derrelle Revis that brought sheer joy with a 100 yard TDs, breaking records, and avoided Jet’s fourth defeat. So an overall 3-3 record before going into the Chargers game, Rex Ryan must be brave yet again in a game that is a must win to turn the tides. This is a testing time for the Jets, Rex and Mark but who's to say that Revis won’t make a surprise show and find another good run on the Chargers.
Kick them down when they are weak and that is what the Chargers are about to do as they travel to New York on Sunday. This will be their second of the three road trip game but lucky having a bye round last weekend. That’s not to say that they are not in form as they are enjoying a three successive victory before stepping onto the Metlife Stadium. The passing offense is one of the best in NFL and with quarterback Phillip Rivers doing the throwing and Vincent Jackson doing the catching, this is a lethal duo. The rushing game is also doing some damage to the opposition and with both Ryan Mathew and Mike Tolbert are their likely keys to winning this road game. If these two are to do their running game then they will run riot on the Jet’s defense all Sunday.
Verdict: A strong feeling that the Chargers might put the Jets back on ground earth. Road win.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Baltimore Ravens
The Jaguars are labeled as the nearly men of the final minutes of the last quarter. They have had their three out of four chances in their claim for victory but ending up losing within one decisive kick or incident. Head Coach Jack Del Rio might not have chosen the right play in order to win the games but Monday Night will give him another chance to put things right. Their 17-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers did raise some eyebrows over the decision of going for a field goal rather than some. Those decisions will need some reviewing with QB Blaine Gabbert and running back Murice Jones-Drew, however both receivers, Mike Thomas and Jason Hill might be the ones that require some more catches.
The Baltimore Ravens are on the run to make the playoffs and there are positive signs in making it with a 4-1 overall record. They travel to EverBank Field on Monday to face a struggling Jaguar team who lacks leadership while the Ravens have a few that they rely on. Their 29-14 win over the Houston Texans last week saw them go on a three consecutive win streak and surely to see that this continue in Jacksonville. Their firepower stems from QB Joe Flacco throwing already 7 TDs while running back Ray Rice looks to run havoc with the Jaguar’s weak defense. Mind you, receiver Anquan Boldin will be part of the scoring bunch. The only concern is that Joe Flacco doesn’t usually do well in the red zone but this season could see something different.
Verdict: Monday Night is Ravens Night and an easy win for them.
