The two finalists of last season will meet on the first day of the NBA regular season, the Dallas Mavericks easily blew the Miami Heat away and here they are a few months later to do it again. The classic rivalry between the Lakers and the Bulls is also one of the highlights of the day while New York Knicks will kick off the NBA season taking on the Boston Celtics.
New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics
The very first game of the NBA 66 game regular season and it is the battle of the East. The New York Knicks have seen some change to their roster, most noticeable are the signings of Tyson Chandler, Mike Bibby, Baron Davis and Steve Novak, however in that process they lost Chauncey Billups, Shawne Williams and Derrick Brown. The team will still have Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire as their leader but hopefully Landry Fields and Toney Douglas are able to add the numbers to the board.
The Boston Celtics travel to the Madison Square Garden without a doubt an aging team that consists of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, time is ticking for these greats and maybe this might be their last. They will hang on to the youth of Rajon Rondo and Jermine O’Neal to keep the ball rolling but once again the new addition to the bench doesn’t look promising as only Brandon Bass and Keyon Dooling were added to the roster. Based on experience, the Celtics have what it takes to go the distance but surely the bench needs to be strong and losing Glen Davis, Delonte West and Nenad Krstic won’t help the cause.
Verdict: This is a matchup which could see two failing projects, Knicks don’t look like a NBA title winning team but neither are Celtics, but head to head, Knicks might take this one.
Dallas Mavericks vs. Miami Heat
The two finalists of the NBA 2010/2011 will get the NBA season 2011/12 started this Christmas. The two teams that played last will be on the menu opening day for basketball fans all over the world. The Dallas Mavericks will have an opportunity to show the world once again why they are the defending champions. They will see last year’s Finals MVP, All-Star Dirk Nowitzki once again leading the team out with the supplement of new additions, forward Lamar Odom and Guard Vince Carter who will certainly strengthen the team. However, with two defeats in the pre-season to the Oklahoma City Thunder, things must change quickly.
The Heat is up for some revenge in Dallas and with the Big 3 taking once again the helm of the team, this could be the season that they make the grade. The final hurdle consisted of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh will have to rise to the challenge of not just getting to the final, but to win it and what more to ask to show faith in the first game against the defending champions. The Big 3 will have Mario Chalmers and Joel Anthony within the starting five. Both Udonis Haslem and Norris Cole could well be involve and both look good in the pre-season warm up games against the Orlando Magic.
Verdict: Miami Heat to get off to a good start on the road once again making the defending champions look silly. The Miami Heat rule when they are on the road.
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Chicago Bulls
One of the great rivalries in basketball, the Lakers will host the Chicago Bulls at the Staple Center for their first game of the season. It is certainly a mouthwatering match up and with players like Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol still on the team. Head Coach is Mike Brown, new to the staff after the retirement of Phil Jackson, for the Lakers and this will be a season full of high expectations but they are with many issues. First of all, there will be no Bryant as he is doubtful after landing on his wrist and second, they are without a point guard, Derek Fisher will be filling in for now while Metta World Peace would be coming off the bench. Both Matt Barnes and Fisher is likely the leading players on Saturday as Bryant and Andrew Bynum won’t be playing, Bynum is suspensed and while Lamar Odom was traded.
This is the time for Chicago Bulls to exercise their dominance over their arch rival. As the Lakers could be without Kobe Bryant, the matchup between MVP Derrick Rose and Bryant looks likely to be a one sided affair where the MVP will win by a mile. Rose is supplemented with good players that know him well, Joakim Noah, Luol Deng, Carlose Boozer and new boy Rip Hamilton to add into the mix. The Bulls were crying out loud to get a shooting guard last season to boost the points and this year they got their man, hopefully now, it isn’t just relying on Rose making the basket. The Bulls beat the Pacers twice in their warm ups before heading to Los Angeles.
Verdict: The hype might be fizzing out through this rivalry since the Lakers won’t have their strongest team on court this Saturday, but that’s just good news for the Bulls, as they are likely winners between the two.
