The battle of the West. something the Lakers are despearate to maintain but surely the Denver Nuggets are going to show that they are there to compete. Two teams going at it on the last day of 2011 and also the first day of 2012, which will see 2011 finalist Miami Heat taking on the Charlotte Bobcats.
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets
This first of two encounters between the Lakers and the Nuggets, the first one will be held on the New Year’s Eve at the Staples Center with a 3:30pm tip off. The Lakers started the season poorly with two defeats, home against the Chicago Bulls and away to the Sacramento Kings, but a bounce back with a 96-71 win over the Utah Jazz could finally set off the Lakers winning form. Before this article was written, the Lakers are set to face the New York Knicks on the 29th of December at home before taking on the Denver Nuggets. The Lakers still need Kobe Bryant to lead the team and with him on the court, he will always keep the Lakers in the hunt for a win. Both Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace also helped out to give head coach Mike Brown his first win of the season. There is more to come from the Lakers and when Andrew Bynum returns, giving them greater firepower and options.
Last two games before facing the Nuggets:
27/12 - Lakers vs. Utah Jazz: 96-71 (W)
29/12 - Lakers vs. NY Knicks: 99-82 (W)
The Denver Nuggets have everything to play for this year and they should make an impression this Saturday. They are going on a back to back match up against the Lakers and the Nuggets aren’t afraid of them as their previous season showed that they are more than capable in competing with the Lakers. If Kobe Bryant is a handful then Nuggets Ty Lawson is the answer to that handful for the Lakers. If greater compliment is handed out, the Nuggets seem to be more than just the starting five, they’ve got Al Harrington, Andrew Miller, Chris Andersen and Rudy Fernandez on the bench, while Nene, Gallinari and Afflalo are currently appointed at the key players. The win over Dallas and Utah were more than convincing and with Portland and Lakers to come on the road, a bit more muscle needs to be flexed.
Last two games before facing the Lakers:
28/12 - Nuggets vs. Utah Jazz: 117-100 (W)
29/12 - Portland Trailblazers vs. Nuggets: 111 - 102 (L)
Verdict:
The last game in 2011 and the first game in 2012, both Lakers and Nuggets will be at each others throats by the end of it all. At the Staples Center, there is a must for the Lakers to win this one before heading over to Denver, but considering that the Nuggets are on the road, Lakers are weak favorites.
Miami Heat vs. Charlotte Hornets
For a team that lost in the last NBA final, the Miami Heat have certainly raised the bar and showing the world that they should or could have been crowned kings of the NBA instead, or at least in 2012. Just three games into the season (before taking on the Timberwolves, which is likely to see another winning performance from the Heat) the Miami Heat are already 3-0, undefeated and very much in the driving seat in every way. Their big 3, Bosh, Wade and LeBron James stands out but with Mario Chalmers and Udonis Haslem are definitely part of the winning structure of the team. If there was one player that you should keep in mind then Point Guard Norris Cole could be something this season. He and Juwan Howard could fit that role which the Heat were missing last season. Their form is good and the understanding between the players is excellent, something is working on the court and that will only translate into wins.
Last two games before facing the Bobcats:
28/12 - Charlotte Bobcats vs. Heat: 95-96 (W)
30/12 - Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Heat: ? - ? (will be updated, once the score is in)
The Bobcats took the Heat to the wire just a couple days ago in 2011. It took a last second play from Dwayne Wade to take that second win away from the Bobcats at home. There is no excuse for the Bobcats to not play up to the Heat as they once again meet on New Year Day. The Bobcats are well aware of their opposition’s strength and by that, Charlotte is looking to come out aggressive and prove yet again they can command on the court with Corey Maggette, DJ White, Boris Diaw, Gerald Henderson and DJ Augustin all racking up over 30 minutes each on the court in last Wednesday’s defeat. The bench might not spell much depth in the roster with only Kemba Walker scoring over 10 points, so it is questionable whether the Bobcats can keep up the pressure on the Heat all night, especially in Miami. Definitely another tight game if Bobcats display the same spirit.
Last two games before facing the Heats:
28/12 - Bobcats vs. Heat: 95-96 (L)
30/12 - Bobcats vs. Orlando Magic: ? - ? (will be updated, once the score is in)
Verdict:
One of the first NBA games in 2012 and Miami Heat looks to extend their four game unbeaten run as they face a tough and solid Charlotte Bobcats. They played each other just recently and since the Heat showed a bit quality in the end, the New Year will surely have the Heat find a more comfortable edge to lead from the start to the end.
