While on the other hand, Tom Boonen abandoned the race in the middle of stage 7 due to a painful headache that was probably sustained from crashed he suffered in stage 5.

Stage 8 Recap

Rui Alberto CostaOn the first mountain stage of Tour de France, the weather was not on the side of the peloton. The stage 8 is just the start for more gravity defying ascends to come for the riders. Overcoming the first mountain stage was Movistar rider Rui Alberto Costa. The 24-year-old rider attacked on the final slopes of the day paid off. The Portuguese made his first victory as he completed the 189km from Aiguirande to Super-Basse and emotionally dedicated his win to his team that needed a little happiness after teammate Xavier Tondo died in a domisti accident two in May and to Juan Mauricio Soler who has ben left with severe brain injuries after crashing during the Tour of Switzerland early this year. On the other hand, Garmin-Cervelo’s Thor Hushovd has not been dislodge as they hit the mountains of central France and as the race entered the Massif Central. Defying the odds once again, he retains his leader’s yellow jersey for at least another day. Bet365 is offering 125/1 for Rui Costa while Thor Hushovd is on odds 33/1 to win the Tour’s Stage 9.
