Mario Gomez is doing what he is suppose to do when he was on the field, scoring is his bread and butter and a penalty miss in the midweek hope will not follow up with firing blank session in the weekend match against Hannover 96. Defending champion, Dortmund is hos FC Cologne.
Dortmund vs. FC Koln
The midweek tragedy in the Champions League must have hurt the pride spot after going down 3-1 away against Olympiakos. The defense was a shambles and leaving them only a point after three games seems a bit too much to ask for if they were to ask for a qualifying spot for the next round. That was the European duties but domestically in the Bundesliga, things are looking a bit brighter and a bit better off, that is if they are to continue their three consecutive wins. The defending champion, Dortmund, are third in the league and six points behind the league leader, Bayern. They face Cologne with a certainly of hoping that striker Lucas Barrios returning to the starting line up, the poor performance from Japanese Shinja Kagawa might see him being relegated to the bench, why, easy, no goals yet from him. In form Robert Lewandowski could yet be the man that will fire them to the top while Patrick Owomoyeia and Marcel Schmelzer are doubtful to take any part on Saturday.
Mid-table FC Cologne will not be looking back after their 2-0 home win over Hannover 96. They have escaped the battle relegation for the time being but only 5 points away from the fellow relegation strugglers, they will need to be on their guard to avoid any more slippage back. Head Coach Stale Solsbakken might have had a slow start to his first season in the Bundesliga but slowly things might work out for him, that is avoiding the drop, of course. One of their key players and in every season that he has been there and will be there, Lukas Podolski who has prove yet again the key bearer of the team. Scoring twice last weekend, Podolski has made it clear that his teammates need to jump on the bandwagon in getting points on their away trips. Both Miso Brecko and Adil Chichi are adhering to the chance but away from home, this will be a uphill struggle for the Solsbakken and his men.
Verdict: Might not be good in Europe but home, they should win this.
Hannover 96 vs. Bayern Munich
They missed several chances to go second in the Bundesliga, Hannover 96 failed miserable to keep tabs with the top teams in the league. They are currently seventh in the Bundesliga and with 2-0 defeat last weekend against Cologne away, the team hasn’t fully recovered from that disappointment as the midweek Europa League saw Hannover 96 drew 2-2 after being in a winning position ten minutes before full time. Even with a disappointing result, Hannover did have all the play and all the chances but defensively they were not in aware and concentration was lacking in certain points. The home team might need some adjusting when Bayern comes around. They will certainly be on the backfoot on morale front and if they can reinstate their form earlier on the season, then this is a team that can take points off their opposition.
This is the team to beat this season and each Matchday week goes by, Bayern seems to be able to hit a consistent stream of wins. Before the international break, Bayern managed only a 0-0 draw against Hoffenheim but they rallied with a 4-0 home win over Hertha Berlin last weekend. They returned to their old self result wise with a midweek champions league 1-1 draw away against Napoli however Bayern had chances to come away with all the points. A missed penalty from Mario Gomez and an own goal from Holger Badstuber does sums up their luck that night. Back to the Bundesliga, Bayern should be excited to get things going again domestically knowing that they do have one of the best squad in the league. Their away record is second to none so players like Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Mario Gomez finding their form, they should be able to pull through. Winning the game is definitely a different matter and with Ivica Olic back, at least on the bench, then they have every chance to claim victory over the weaked form of the late Hannover team. Bayern is still without Arjen Robben but that should ruin their march for a win on Sunday.
Verdict: Damage continues for Hannover while Bayern sneaks that three points.
