Top fixtures in the Bundesliga where Bayern takes on Werder Bremen and Dortmund vists the other Borussia team in the Bundesliga but named Monchengladbach, all on Saturday. Schalke 04 is task to take on the bottom club FC Augsburg at home.
Bayern Munchen vs. Werder Bremen
When was the last time Bayern lost two consecutive Bundesliga games? Their 3-2 away defeat to Mainz last weekend showed more exposure of their midfield weakness and them suffering from Bastian Schweinsteiger being sidelined. Bayern lost the lead in the Bundesliga to Dortmund but that isn’t the worry, the worry is that Bayern could slump further in the Bundesliga home at the Allianz Arena if they can’t come up with the goods against Werder Bremem. The midfield needs a bit of adjusting and the offensive tactics needs a bit of more push as they can’t rely on Daniel van Buyten to give them set piece goals all through the game.
This is a top game for Werder Bremen to take on. They are currently sitting fourth in the Bundesliga with 26 points and only one spot away from their hosts in third. This could be a good chance for Bremen to challenge for a champion league spot after last season struggle with the bottom half. They bounced back from a horrible 5-0 away lost to Borussia Monchengladbach a fortnight ago, to win 2-0 at home over Stuttgart. It’s never easy away from home and that is one of Werder Bremen’s weakness. Although, that 5-0 defeat was a rude awakening and if they want to compete for an European spot then they need to tighten the defense and not leak goals. Bremen have in the seven away games, two wins, two draws and three defeats, the signs have them to either lose or draw in southern Germany on Saturday.
Verdict: Bayern’s form is dipping, Bremen’s travel isn’t marvelous, a draw might suit the pair.
Borussia Monchengladbach vs. Dortmund
This is the first meeting between the two Borussia teams in the Bundesliga. Monchengladbach will take the honours to host the first one with sight in take all three points and leapfrog their visitor, league leaders, Dortmund. Leveled on 29 points but with a worse goal score and placed second in the Bundesliga, Monchengladbach will take every opportunity to make sure they are with a chance to claim the top spot. Four consecutive wins and their latest was a 3-0 away win over FC Cologne sets up more than just a hype with they turn the attention on Dortmund, most notably Hanke and Juan Arango have scored in two consecutive games, not forgetting Marco Reus are scoring regularly too.
Dortmund found themselves leading the Bundesliga after beating local rivals Schalke 04 last weekend with 2-0 in the Ruhr derby. The reigning champions might have got their priorities right since their chances of qualifying for the last 16 in the Champions League were minimized to none. Their domestic league had a dramatic change and with three consecutive wins on a trot, Dortmund is back where they belong. Another good reason why they are back at the top is that some of the key players are slowly finding their form, both Shinji Kagawa and Lucas Barrios are looking to claim a starting spot in Klopp’s 4-2-3-1 formation, but options of Lewandowski and Blaszczykowski are available on the day.
Verdict: Another tight weekend affair for Dortmund and a draw looks likely between the two.
Schalke 04 vs. FC Augsburg
This should be one an easy fixture for Schalke 04 as this top against bottom matchup in the Bundesliga on Sunday later afternoon kickoff. The home team had an European midweek Europa League group match which ended with a 2-1 home victory over Steaua Bucuresti, which virtually has given them the ticket to the next round in that competition. However, domestically, Schalke 04 failed to show any potential when they lost 2-0 to their fierce rivals, Dortmund, who happened to finish Matchday 14 top of the Bundesliga, another kick in their teeth for the Schalke 04 fans. Schalke 04 rested a few key players like Timo Hildebrand, Metzelder and Draxler. Farfan is still out with injury and sorely missed in the offensive phrases. FC Augsburg travel to the Ruhr and things are just looking bleak, or even more bleaker when it comes to away game. However, one thing did them good, they know how it feels to win for the second time this season. They beat Wolfsburg 2-0 at home and hopefully they can build on that momentum.
Verdict: Home win but FC Augsburg won’t make it that easy for Schalke 04 to achieve.
