Raul vs. Werder Bremen

Schalke 04 and Raul have done it before beating Werder Bremen convincingly at home but this time around, Werder Bremen are coming with some vengence so can be said about Dortmund who is in need for the three points.

Freiburg vs. Dortmund

Rock bottom club Freiburg is preparing themselves for the reigning champions, Dortmund, for a visit this coming Saturday. It’s no secret that Freiburg is in a huge asking when they take on the field and going by their performance in Matchday 16, then more misery is to be seen. The 4-0 defeat to Cologne last weekend was the first time in five weeks that they didn’t pick any points. Three consecutive draws but the latest defeat has left them in a bit of a confidence trouble. The defense is in a bit of misunderstanding with each other, especially goalie Oliver Baumann and defender Felix Bastians. What is left in this team, striker Papiss Demba Cisse, he might be the only hope.

Two steps forward but one step back for the defending champions. Dortmund didn’t do themselves any favours by getting yet another draw but this time at home to Kaiserslautern. Was it the case of the midweek Champions league that Dortmund had to play or just not efficient enough in front of the goal, we’ll have to go with the latter suggestion as Dortmund had plenty of chances but couldn’t convert. Positively Japanese striker Shinija Kagawa scored and surely Mario Gotze will be starting this time around after being bench in the last game. Three points away from first place Bayern Munich which should be a good enough motivation talk for Jurgen Klopp but surely unless he is going to tweak his formation yet again.

Verdict: Another week with a miss chance for the defending champion, hope not as Dortmund can’t lose this one to a bottom team.

Obscure Stat - Over the last 6 Bundesliga seasons, when a club positioned in the bottom 6 of the table are playing at home on a 2 drawn home game streak, they have won just 8 of 29 matches played for a win profitability of minus 53%.

Schalke 04 vs. Werder Bremen

Top Bundesliga match in this weekend’s fixture and we’ll head off to third place Schalke 04 who will be taking on 5th place Werder Bremen. The home side is very much in a good stint of form, three consecutive wins in all competitions and a win over Werder Bremen will make it a third win in the Bundesliga. Last weekend, Schalke 04 managed to win 2-1 away against Hertha Berlin, of course, top scorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scoring one of the goals. However, the midweek 3-0 away win in Israel saw several key players left out of this game and even coach Huub Stevens, but surely they should all return this weekend. New boy Teemu Pukki seems to be getting a hang of it chipping in with some goals once in a while.

Fifth place Werder Bremen bounced back from a 4-1 defeat a fortnight ago against Bayern, to beating Wolfsburg 4-1 last weekend to get things going once again. They aren’t that far behind the league leaders either as five points could easily be overturned, well at least in the new year as we have only two matchday to go before the winter break. Top scorer Claudio Pizarro is really showing his experience on the field, not just scoring but also as a leader in which it is infectious as Markus Rosenborg has really taken the bait, he is also scoring the goals. The real deal is that Werder Bremen hasn’t being able to make the grade as they have lost to all the clubs above them in the Bundesliga and Schalke 04 is certainly no easy opposition.

Verdict: Considering that Werder Bremen hasn’t beat a top opposition, looks likely that Schalke 04 will benefit from this Bremen complex.

Obscure Stat - Over the last 6 Bundesliga seasons, when a home club is playing on a 3 game home winning streak against an away club on a 2 game away losing streak, the home club has won 13 of 15 matches played, for a win profitability of 46%.
