Gomez Ribery

The unlikely duo in Bayern as both Gomez and Ribery are scoring at will week in, week out. They now travel to Schalke 04 this Sunday, while Champions Dortmund travel to Hannover on Saturday, and Nurnberg hosts Werder Bremen.

Nurnberg vs. Werder Bremen

Good late form is giving dividends to Nurnberg and their fans. Two straight wins on the trot has put the home side in the top half of the Bundesliga habouring 7th place with 9 points, tied with two other teams, Schalke 04 and Hoffenheim. We can start by saying that striker Tomas Pekhart will not be part of the team that will be taking on the field on Saturday as he was received a red card in the 2-1 away win over FC Cologne last weekend. It is likely that Jens Hegeler will lead the lines with Marvin Lattenhardt, where double penalty goal scorer Timmy Simons will marshal the midfield and help out on the offensive side of the field. Coach Hecking will have to toughen up his back four as that seems to be a weakness when they ever concede.

Top flights Werder Bremen are showing great signs of the positive results that will be coming their way this season. Currently residing second but joined top with Bayern at 12 points, Werder Bremen are surprising everyone with their current form with three straight wins, lastly with a 2-0 home win over Hamburg. They face a solid Nurnberg team but with the striking force of Claudio Pizarro, Markus Rosenberg and Marko Arnautovic, they look dangerous in every inch of the pitch. Not to mention playmarker, Marko Marin is showing positive signs of greatness for the future while Aaron Hunt is marshalling the midfield like he has done it for years. The lost of Per Mertesacker did not seem to bother the Werder Bremen team and the return of defender Naldo will do the away team some good, although Hamburg rarely tested the goal keeper Time Weiss. Coach Schaaf have given a new lifeline for Bremen to endure and hope this will continue in Nurnberg.

Verdict: Top half fight in the Bundesliga and Bremen looks good value for a win.

Hannover 96 vs. Dortmund

Mid-table Hannover 96 has a bit to do when the reigning champions visit in the televised late afternoon kickoff. The home side is struggling to find the winning form that they had in the opening two games of the season, the last three matches saw two draws and most recently a 3-0 away defeat to Stuttgart. Hannover has scored in every match barred the defeat to Stuttgart so with the return of Didier Konan who was also given one half in the midweek 0-0 draw in the Europa League against Standard Liege. Now they are faced yet again with a task to keep another clean sheet after being successful in the midweek.

The heavy schedule is playing a part in hampering Dortmund’s form and that can be seen in the domestic league where the away team will start mid-table with seven points, five behind the league leaders. If that wasn’t enough to show the tough schedule is taking it’s toll, then the midweek 1-1 draw against Arsenal in the champions league group stages showed that maybe Dortmund hasn’t up their gear due to loss of key members on the team. The lost of Nuri Sahlin shouldn’t be a big issue after the emerging Mario Gotze but in the striking position, the absence of Luca Barrios has seen Dortmund scoring less. It was Ivan Perisic that rescued Dortmund in the midweek but last weekend, it was a 2-1 defeat to Hertha Berlin at home. They now travel to Hannover in search for the three points but that could be somewhat diffuse as Dortmund might not be ready to take all three after a midweek European game.

Verdict: Back to reality and reality might just bite Dortmund hard, a draw might be on the card.

Schalke 04 vs. Bayern

Sunday will see two title chasers for the Bundesliga going at each other. Schalke 04 sitting 6th in the league with 9 points widely disappointed last weekend when they were defeated 2-1 away to Wolfsburg. They marginally did better in the midweek Europa League group game against Steaua Bucuresti in Cluj after happily taking a 0-0 draw back to Germany after seeing Metzelder, Kluge, Baumjohann and Jurado all starting from the bench, while Huntelaar and Raul were part of the starting eleven. They weren’t spared in Cluj and they will need to get some rest as Sunday will be yet another fight.

Bayern are starting to show their true colours with Coach Jupp Heynckes in charge. After the first game of the season ending with a home defeat, Bayern has not looked back ever since, notching up seven consecutive winning streaks in all competitions. Sitting firmly at the top of the Bundesliga with a superior goal difference after destroying Freiburg 7-0 at home, the championship run doesn’t look likely to be derailed at any point. Then again what Bayern then did was to show that even in Europe, they are able to find what is needed to put themselves back on the map in the champions league, 2-0 away win over Villarreal is a good start to their campaign. What is more important is that their key players are back in good form, both Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are either there or getting there. Striker Mario Gomez just keeps on scoring and the midfielder is helping the team in both assists and goals. This is a balance that will try to keep their fans happy with win after win.

Verdict: Over 3.5 goals and cheeky 4.5 too for you punters, but Bayern should be able to win this one.
