Costa Rica 2011 Copa America

Costa Rica will have their fourth appearances in the 2011 Copa America this summer as a last minute replacement after Japan pulled out from the competition. Japan’s National team together with Mexico were invited to take part as the guest nations in Argentina’ Copa America. However, with the recent disaster in Japan in March, that struck them with the earthquake and tsunami, they decided to withdraw from the tournament last April. It was said that World Cup 2010 winner, Spain, was given an invitation afterwards. However, the Spanish turned it down. Costa Rica accepted the invitation and confirmed their commitment last month.

The Ticos will be led by head coach Ricardo La Volte who has a title in his bet, winning the World Cup as a goal keeper of Argentina in 1978. Coach La Volte will be leading an inexperience squad, consisting of 17 Under-23 players. Considering that they have only participated three times in Copa America, they have reached the quarterfinals both in Columbia in 2001 and in Peru in 2004. It will not be an easy ride for skipper Bryan Ruiz who place in the FC Twente and his team in Argentina that their former coaches believed they have a very slim chance in winning the competition.

Head Coach: Hernan Dario Gomez (El Bolillo)
