Mexico 2011 Copa America

Fresh from winning their 9th CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 title after beating USA in a 4-2 result in the final, Mexico will be heading to Argentina as one of the invited nations to participate in the Copa America 2011. They have been a regular guest nation in this tournament in which it will be their 9th appearances. Currently ranked 9th in the Fifa World Ranking, the CONCACAF Gold Cup Champion will not have the same players that played against USA, as well as, their head coach Jose Manuel de la Torre.

Assistant coach Luis Fernando Tena will be leading the players that mostly consist of the U-22 side Mexico-based players. Just after winning their recent title, the squad is on the headline once again earlier this week, but this time it is for the wrong reason. Their preparation for Argentina’s 2011 Copa America has been rocked by scandal after eight players were fined and banned for six months for allegedly consorting with prostitutes, bringing them to their rooms. In which it was was only found out when they have reported that some of their belongings were missing. Jonathan dos Santos, a reserve-team player for European champions Barcelona, was banned along with Mexico-based Israel Jimenez, Nestor Vidrio, Marco Fabian, Jorge Hernandez, Javier Cortes, Nestor Calderon and David Cabrera.

They have now been replaced by Kristian Alvárez (Guadalajara), Osvaldo Alanis (Estudiantes Tecos), Diego de Buen (Pumas), Antonio Gallardo (Guadalajara), Edgar Pacheco (Tigres), Carlos Emilio Orrantía (Pumas), Alan Pulido (Tigres) and Ulises Dávila (Guadalajara). On the other side, the El Tri will still have Giovani Dos Santos who scored in the Gold Cup will be with the team and will help the depleted Mexico team in their quest to win a back to back title as they head to face Chile in their first game. In the 2007, Mexico finished third place after beating Uruguay in a 3-1 result.
