Eriksen

Christian Eriksen is the latest sensation to emerge in European football and he will surely explode against Iceland on Saturday evening. Elsewhere, the three lions will entertain Switzerland at Wembley with a kickoff at 16:15 BST, while Germany beat Austria 2-1 in Vienna.

Austria vs. Germany

Group A is dominated by Germany with 15 points after five games, neighbors Austria are struggling to keep up with their big brother and with also five games played, they have only 7 points. Vienna will once against be host to the grudge match in which Germany are heavy favourites to take all three points.

The Euro 2012 Austrian campaign start out well with two wins and one draw in the their first three games but ever since the Austria followed up with two defeats by Belgium and Turkey, both with 2-0. This has got Coach Dietmar Constantini to reschuffle his team a bit by including four uncapped players with five German Bundesliga-based players into their 23 man squad. There was no space for both Werder Bremen striker Marko Arnautovic and also Mainz 05 midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz are omitted, while goalkeeper Jurgen Macho is out with an injury. Austria will have everything to do but also at the same time, all to play for as they are not expect to beat their northern neighbours. A cautious 4-4-2 will be deployed on Friday evening in Vienna.

Germany are streaming rolling in Group A and they can afford a few set back, if it comes in Vienna then it won’t be a surprise either. The reason behind this is that Coach Jurgen Low does not have his ideal players available on Friday. He has seen Miroslav Klose, Sven Bender, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Christian Trasch are all out with injuries. Low did not see the reason to pick captain Michael Ballack, Per Mertesacker, Jerome Boateng and Marcell Jensen, so in comes Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer and Mario Gotze. This is the new generation and with that thought, there must be some consequences to their result and if it comes in Vienna, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Having said that, Germany has won the last four times against Austria and their last encounter was in Euro 2008, where the only goal of the game saw Germany advance through to the next round while the host was kicked out of the tournament. The run up to the qualifying match on Friday, Germany beat Uruguay 2-1 last Monday.

England vs. Switzerland

After four games played in Group G, England is leading the group with 10 points, leveled with Montenegro but six points in front of Switzerland, in third place. These two teams have already met in the Euro 2010 tournament, back in September 2010, England trumphed 3-1 at St. Jakob Park in Basle. Goals came from Wayne Rooney, Adam Johnson and also Darren Bent.

Home at Wembley, England has been pretty much hard to beat so defeat is one word that they don’t often see when the three lions are on the pitch. The last time the England team played, they had Ghana visiting and took a late equalizer to take 1-1 draw in a friendly. Coach Fabio Capello has gone for some adventurous selection, however he is without Steven Gerrard, Michael Carrick, David Stockdale and Jermain Defoe, also keeper Ben Foster taking a break from the national side. The Italian is left with old guard Rio Ferdinand who returns for the first time after being striped off the England captaincy, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Peter Crouch. New blood added into the squad is Bobby Zamora, Jack Wilshere and new boy Kyle Walker.  A 4-4-2 formation is likely to be deploy and without suspended Wayne Rooney, it should see Peter Crouch pairing up with Darren Bent up front.

Switzerland is trailing in the Group G and they must be feeling the fight of being second fiddle in this group. The chances for them to take all three points in Wembley is minimal but a dogfight to get a point can’t be ruled out if they were to go with a defensive formation and tactics on Saturday.  New names to the Swiss squad are Innocent Emeghara, Admir Mehmedi and Granit Xhaka, replacing both Alexander rei and Marco Streller, both retired in the international scene. While Gokhan Inier is set to replace Frei as captain and giving young players the chance to make their mark.

Iceland vs. Denmark

Group H has all the Viking markings on  it and both Iceland and Denmark will be contesting for the three points to get closer to brotherly love Norway at the top of the group with 10 points. Iceland are rock bottom with only a point out of four games, on the other hand, Denmark is set to play a part in qualifying for the Euro 2012 next summer.

Coach Olafur Johannesson has relatively a young squad to contest an experience Danish side that will be seeking all three points in Reykjavik on Saturday. Most of the players selected in the Icelandic squad will be also making their way to the Under-21 Championship in Denmark at the end of the month. Another sad news for Iceland is that out of the 21 previous meetings, the home side have not beaten the Danes in any shape or form.

No major surprises in the Danish squad that will be traveling to Iceland, all the usual suspects like Dennis Rommerdahl, Nicklas Bendtner, Lars Jacobsen, Christen Poulsen and William Kvist all named to get be in the starting line up. Coach Morten Olsen did look into a few new names that might get a run in on Saturday, goal keeper Kasper Schmeichel, Leon Jessen, Thomas Enevoldsen and Lass Schone will be given the Icelandic defensive a run for their money. Much attention will be on Danish star sensation, Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen, he could get that start in which he could be the playmaker to sparkle everything off. The Danes are hungry to get the win and a win that will lift them to a place within a fight for a place next summer in Poland/Ukraine, that is if they win, but at least favorites on Saturday.
