The Hoops are looking to continue their campiagn in Europe and Atletico Madrid is standing in their way. This is also repeated elsewhere between Tottenham and POAK, however the FC København will travel to Ukraine in hope to keep their hopes in qualifying for the last 32.
Celtic vs. Atletico Madrid
Matchday 5 will see Celtic host the Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid at Celtic Park on Wednesday evening. The difference between the two teams is sole visible in Group I where Atletico is leading the group on 7 points on goal difference over Udinese, while Celtic are on 5 points searching for three point this midweek. Celtic looks very much confident to take up the task against the Spaniard, they destroyed St. Mirren 5-0 in the weekend and slowly haling into their rivals at the top of the Clyde Premiership. Without a doubt, manager Neil Lennon must start weekend hat trick hero Gary Hooper in their Wednesday starting lineup and also Samaras as his partnership. A win here will re-ignite their chances for a spot in the last 32.
The Spaniards knows a win here will secure them a route to the next round and knowing already their opposition from Matchday 1, they won’t be rushed to take control over this tie. After witnessing their 4-1 destruction by local rivals Real Madrid, it will be an easy act to follow up as they can’t sink any further than that, while there was two red card from Sodin and Courtois. One statistic that Atletico can hold on to is that they are undefeated against Celtic in five occasions and their last meeting saw both Falcao and Diego, surely in the starting lineup on Wednesday night. Anything but a defeat on the night would suit Atletico and finish things at home on Matchday 6.
Verdict: Celtic in great form but Atletico won’t be an easy side to play against, draw.
Vorskla vs. FC København
Both teams meeting in Ukraine won’t have much hope in getting themselves into the next round. The home side is bottom of Group B with one point and only pride is on stake in Matchday 5 as they meet the Danish Champions. They made a good figure for themselves over the weekend, they managed to lose 6-3 away to Metalurg Donetsk and that should dampen the mood if they get something out this midweek. They are still searching for their first win in the Europa group stages and if they manage that, they will end any hope FC København would have in qualifying for the next round.
The Danish champions need a win to take their qualifying chances to the last 32 into Matchday 6. However, the hard part is Matchday 5 where they need another win over Vorskla in Ukraine. FC København has in Matchday 1 narrowly beat their guest by 1-0 through a Morten Nordstand penalty but this time, it is likely they will start with a N. Doye and Santin combination to get the early goal to secure that three points. A 2-1 win over HB Koge was saved by two goals in two minutes. A victory is a victory and the Copenhagen team will do anything to get that win in Ukraine. Surely a draw or defeat will end the Danish euro campaign this season.
Verdict: Uneasy tip for the away team to win, small stakes but able to do it on the night, FC København win.
Tottenham vs. PAOK
Group A is still open for candidates to claim the two spots that will give access to the last 32. Both teams are the look out for some glory in Europe but it is the Greek side, PAOK who has the one point advantage over their Wednesday evening opposition at White Hart Lane. The guest is just holding on to the lead in Group A with 8 points while Spurs aren’t far off with 7 points. In terms of form, PAOK didn’t made much effort in the domestic league when they faced Kerkyra in the weekend, a bore 0-0 draw certainly disappointed a few but more on the players have thoughts of the midweek tie against Tottenham at their back of their mind. On the other hand, Spurs won’t be turning up with youngsters, unlike their previous matches in the Europa League. A win here will give manager Harry Redknapp less headache in their final game but with the form they are in, surely no one will go against Spurs. An away 3-1 win against WBA should surely give PAOK the expectation of what is going to come at White Hart Lane.
Verdict: Depending what team Redknapp put on, Spurs has the depth to take the three at home.
