An easy win for Fulham back in Matchday 2 when the Cottagers took on Odense and now they meet again in the final game of the Group in which Fulham needs a win to advance into the last 32. Both Lazio and Besiktas also needs a similar result at home and both in action this midweek Wednesday.
SS Lazio vs. Sporting Clube De Portugal
The Italian outfit are very much engaged with this competition but priority must be put on the Serie A. However, despite the situation, Lazio are still within a chance to qualify for the last 32 of the Europa League. The quest is to win their game against Sporting at home and hope that FC Vaslui will avoid the away victory over FC Zurich. Lazio are unbeaten in three home games this season in the Europa League but lost 2-1 on Matchday two to their guests this Thursday. The Giallorossi are without Ruben Olivera, Giacomazzi, OFere and Souleymane Diamoutene but that didn’t stop them from getting a great 3-2 result at Lecce this weekend.
Group D has already found its winner and that is the visiting side who is likely to field a weakened side on Wednesday. It’s not expected that Sporting Lisbon to bring their key players after securing their group and surely their priority is on their domestic league instead. Their 1-0 win over Nacional at home should pave way for a few key players to be rested for next weekend, so don’t expect that the Sporting will find that same strength in Matchday 1 where they beat Lazio 2-1 at home.
Verdict: Lazio to win and hopefully enough to luck to squeeze through to the next stage.
Besiktas vs. Stoke City
The Turkish outfit can decide their fate by beating Stoke City which will put them top of the group while a draw will secure their route to the last 32. Therefore, the home team should be in a comfortable place knowing that a defeat could send them out of this competition. Their domestic form should give an indication that something positive will be happening this coming Wednesday. Besiktas won 4-1 away to Manisaspor and expect M. Fernandes to be recalled, however R. Quaresma will be out of this game. The final game in this group could have two sides going home happy.
Don’t expect a strong team to be fielded in Turkey and never mind either that Tony Pulis will be flying there with more than 5 key players. Stoke City has already secure a way to the last 32 and there is no purpose that to extend further heavy schedule for the players. Therefore as you might have guessed it, Stoke City is likely to rest their key players for the upcoming Premiership weekend instead. Although, having said all of that, Stoke City still needs one point to finish top of the group but with their current crop like Jerome, Sorensen, Palacios, Wilinson and Upson could just prove enough to get a draw.
Verdict: Why does a draw keeps on flashing on me? Well, a draw will suit both teams but knowing Stoke City might not even try, then a home win is a good alternative.
Fulham vs. Odense BK
This is one game that Fulham needs to win after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to FC Twente in the last few minutes in Matchday 5. The Cottagers have all to do for at Craven Cottage and a win will secure them a place in the next round. It didn’t help to see that Fulham losing 2-0 away to Swansea in the weekend but the Cottagers are not to be underestimated at home in this competition. They are undefeated at Craven Cottage and if Martin Jol is to pick players like Andrew Johnson, Danny Murphy, Riise, Hangeland and Clint Dempsey to the starting line up then Fulham is well within a chance, besides they have already beaten the Danish side in Denmark so this shouldn’t be a tough fixture in their calendar.
The Danish season has ceased for the winter break so in which Odense BK will have enough rested before traveling to London to face Fulham at Craven Cottage. They did schedule in a friendly game at home against Swedish team, Malmo FF, but that didn’t help them much good as they lost 3-0. So their last competitive was against SonderjuskE and managed a 4-0 away win with N Kadrii and Peter Utake getting on the scoring sheet. However, the run out in Craven Cottage is won’t mean much as OB has already played it’s role in the Europa League group and not matter what happens, they will end up bottom.
Verdict: Fulham to grab the last spot in Group K.
