Not much to go for Barcelona to retain the La Liga, but first Lionel Messi will need to dispose of local rivals, Espanyol at Nou Camp on Sunday while arch rivals, Real Madrid will travel to Sevilla in search for the three points in hope to bridge that gap between them and Barca. Valencia plays home to Real Socidedad at the Mestella to keep their third place.
Valencia vs. Real Sociedad
Two defeats in two sessions, Valencia surely won’t be giving away the third place so easily to rivals Villareal who are just three points behind them. Week 35 could see the third place being contested once again if Valencia fails to turn up on Saturday home to Real Sociedad. After being demolished 6-3 at Mestella by Real Madrid, it was followed up with a 1-0 away defeat to Osasuna which also saw them firing blanks for some time. Unusual as it is, Valencia has now the chance to redeem themselves by getting the three points to strengthen their position in the La Liga with the third place in sight with 3 more games to go.
A well earn penalty last weekend could be the deciding factor that Real Sociedad remains in the La Liga next season, Xabi Prieto will be remembered as the one who dished out Barcelona a defeat last weekend with his penalty goal to send them clear of the relegation drop zone and with four points from safety, work still needs to be done before calling it the season this year. It was obvious that Barca had a few things on their mind last weekend but you can’t take anything away from Real Sociedad who turned up the tempo after scoring their first goal and if that transpire to the Mestella, then there is every possibility that a point could be collected.
Sevilla vs. Real Madrid
Level on point with Atletico Madrid at 52 points, Sevilla will have to face the prospect of being given a tough task against Real Madrid on Saturday evening in serach for the three points. Lying fifth in the league and a point away from Athletic Bilbao, they need to keep winning in order to secure European football next season. With the good form they have discover late in the season, Sevilla could set to hit Real Madrid while they are down with Renato and Alvaro Negredo all hitting form in front of the goal. This is precisely what Sevilla wants in order to finish in a high.
Another mystery to see what kind of Real Madrid team will turn up against Sevilla. There are so many faces in that team which should win you games week in and week out, but that just didn’t happen. Losing the war on the El Clasico must have hit the pride but their chances of throwing themselves back into the domesetic title race was hamper with a 3-2 home defeat to Real Zaragoza. This is the team that has a Ronaldo, Benazema, Kaka and Xabi Alonso on offer, not to include Adebayor, Di Maria and Marcelo but what has gone wrong, maybe Mourinho’s priorities and the Madrid’s reputation at stake that took toll on the players, manager and club representative. It remains to see whether it will a team that wants to return back to winning ways or the season was over maybe just short of two weeks ago when they lost to Barcelona.
Barcelona vs. Espanyol
Mathematically there is 12 points to play for and 8 points on the account should put Barcelona at ease at Nou Camp on Sunday against Espanyol. There will be no rest nor is pre-celebration of the Spanish title heading to the Catalan as four points still needed in order to retain the championship. One must speculate whether Guardiola will be fielding a strong eleven or give a few players a rest like Puyol, Inesita and also Messi. The return of Abidal was a heartful one when he given a great ovation at the midweek game, could he return to play on the left side for 90 minutes is still pretty pre-mature so the defensive is still rocked by injuries. Never the less, you just can’t see this Barcelona team lose twice in roll, can you? With the title so close, it’s easier to do the job done at home and with Mascherano bossing the midfield, it should a close shop for the opposition.
Mid-table Espanyol is relinquishing to see that they defeat their local rival in this derby to come. It does seem far fetch for Espanyol to go over to Nou Camp and bet them but if confidence permits, this should be a really good game. Last weekend, they were able to defeat Athletic Bilbao at home and with a late surge to capture a ticket for European football, it doesn’t look that far away providing they get a point at Nou Camp. If they can stop Messi who has already scored 31 goals this season, which is the same number as Espanyol both won games and lose games added together, Espanyol looks likely to be the little brother that will sideline for yet another game.
