The title race is on and Old Trafford will play out the final part of the season 2010/11 with Manchester United and Chelsea fight for the three points that will tilt the title to their favour. At the bottom, West Ham are fighting for their lives to survive and they will face Blackburn on Saturday while on Monday, Liverpool will travel to London to face a solid Fulham side.
West Ham vs. Blackburn
Any hopes for West Ham to survive yet another drop or relegation miracle, well they don’t have Carlos Tevez anymore so it remains to see whether Avarm Grant can find something out from his magical pocket and blow the flying bubble to safety. Saturday could yet see the end of West Ham in the Premier League.
This team has quality and with the council backing them to take the Olympic Stadium in 2012, things should go from good to better. That hasn’t been the miracle story so far. They were out of the foot of the table a few months ago with new owners and new players joining the club in a fight to revive the club. That happen only briefly and with the confusion whether Grant was to suppose to leave or not, then the choice to stick with him will come to a conclusion against Blackburn. West Ham have players to keep them up, England Internationals, Player Writers’ award winner Scott Parker, who also returns after missing three games, Charlton Cole, Matthew Upson (doubtful) and Robert Green, also with the talents of Ba, Piquionne, OBinna and Hitzlsperger should be able to keep them up. However, they need all nine points and with some hopeful wishing that the others will drop points around them.
Away from Ewood Park, Blackburn tends to struggle but of all places, Upton Park would not be the prefer place to keep on struggling. Last weekend, Blackburn made a big outcry to secure their future in the Premier League another season by beating Bolton 1-0 at home. Although far from safe yet, they are currently 16th in the league and three points away from the relegation zone. A defeat in London could result to them getting back in the mix of the relegation dogfight and to avoid that, it would be a simple thing to go to Upton Park and play physically against the Hammers with the sight to secure at least a point. Blackburn boss Steve Kean is confident that his players, minus the doubtful of Dunn, Hoilett, Salgado, Nelsen and Grella, can go and do what is necessary to save his neck in the first season of being manager in the Premiership. B
It’s not over until the fat lady sings, that is something Avram Grant is hoping for as the ax is falling and he is no stranger to relegated teams. He’s done it before with Portsmouth and maybe West Ham could be added to the infamous list of his. If you do look at the line up then there is no secret that West Ham does look capable of turning things but could it be the case of being too little too late.
Manchester United vs. Chelsea
What a fantastic end to the Premiership, just three points between Manchester United and Chelsea who will battle for the Premiership title on Sunday at Old Trafford. Three points should seal the deal for Manchester United while three points would put them level on points with the Red Devils.
The fortress of Old Trafford spells a lot of confidence before the game against Chelsea. They are unbeaten at home since April 2010 and took 49 points out of possible 51 this season, one track record definitely hard to match. Manchester United has clearly being dominated in both domestically and in European competition over Chelsea. United has beaten Chelsea three times and all within a goal difference, so what will be the difference, well it’s all about the big players performing on the day and gaining the wide against the Blues. Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Ryan Giggs should return to the United starting eleven after getting a rest in the midweek 4-1 win over Schalke 04. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be without Hargreaves while Patrice Evra is rated doubtful.
The comeback kings will start with the good news that they have a clean bill of health when it comes to their players travel to Manchester. Manager Carlo Ancelotti should be able to deploy his best players with the best fit tactic in a must win game if they want to lift the Premier League trophy. Their European exit to Manchester United should put Chelsea on the wiser side of things as Ancelotti remain pointless against his nemesis Alex Ferguson. It will be the case where Chelsea needs to get his full backs wide in order to create that danger and threat, but nothing more than possession of the ball that will put United on the back foot. Again the question remains who will start in the attack, could Torres get thenod over an in form physical Drogba.
The prize is the Premiership and that should be enough to motivate either team to get their best into the mix. Both Chelsea and Manchester United knows each other inside out so there won’t be much between them and it shows in the past meetings. One goal between the two and if Chelsea pull the rabbit out of the hat, then it can only be one of the big star signing getting the vital goal.
Fulham vs. Liverpool
Liverpool will head to Craven Cottage on Monday evening to face a formidable Fulham team who has been picking up form at the turn of the year. A home victory would satisfy the home fans in a run to finish the season in the high while Liverpool are looking to gain that European spot for next season.
Fulham might not have any incentive to win this game as they are safe from the relegation drop zone for the second consecutive season. Manager Mark Hughes will be proud over his team’s performance home at the cottage as they have won six of their last seven games and only Blackburn managed to score against them. Their away form is nowhere near as impressive as the home record but that won’t worry Hughes as his team has secure yet another year in the Premiership. The Welsh manager will be without Damien Duff, Gera and Halliche. He will be hoping that top scorer Dempsey will return to the lineup after suffering a hamstring strain as the American has been his key player scoring goals
If Liverpool showed the same level of consistent play earlier on this season then they won’t be struggling to even get into the Europa League next season. The turbulent season has seen greatness in Liverpool after the turn of the year when Kenny Daglish took over and collected 30 points. Impressive but still no contract so that still remains to be solved in the post season. Getting back to Premiership game against Fulham, Liverpool will struggle once again at the back four where Agger, Aurelio and Kelly are still out, so Glen Johnson, Flanagan, Skrtel and Carragher will keep their place in the starting line up just like the 3-0 win over Newcastle last weekend. Daglish won’t be able to use the service of Gerrard and Jovanovic this season but hopefully Joe Cole and Andy Carroll could yet get the confidence before the season ends.
Both teams have made great stride in 2011 and with that incentives hopefully both teams will start out strong next season. However, head to head, Fulham has the better of Liverpool at Craven Cottage while the invite is extended to the host when Fulham is at Anfield. Home at Craven Cottage, Fulham are a strong team but going forward without potent Duff, they might struggle, Liverpool got their defense in place and going forward Carroll could cause plenty of issues for Fulham back four.
