The Battle for North London, both Tottenham and Arsenal will not want to lose this one, for Arsenal, dropping points would be also saying bye bye to the Premiership title while Tottenham could be in danger of not getting a champions league spot next season. Chelsea will take on Birmingham in West London while Newcastle will take on Manchester United on Tuesday at St. James Park.
Newcastle vs. Manchester United
Mid-table Newcastle United have nothing to worry about when it comes to the drop zone as something will be in place next season and that is their survival of the Premiership as one of the promoted teams. Although many will say that Newcastle is still three points from safety so with that in mind, Manager Pardew will have to think whether he is able to minimum get a point to get closer to safety. Pardew has a problem, his team is depleted to bare minimum and even captain Kevin Nolan is doubtful, further injuries has hampered the Newcastle front lines with Leon Best, with only strikers Shola Ameobi, Kufi and Nile Rangers available.
The Red Devils might be fuming, especially Rio Ferdinand, with the 1-0 defeat to the Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley but there isn’t much time for them to sulk as the Premiership bring yet another game for Manchester United before Easter season starts. A win here would keep the distance between the Manchester United and Arsenal at the top but any points lost could be a fatal consequences in Man U’s quest for their 19th Premiership title. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be once again sidelined and this time, Paul Scholes will join him as he received a straight red against Manchester City. The return of Wayne Rooney will be significant for United and the chances of a goal on Tuesday evening is likely with the inform striker.
Not much contest here when Newcastle have half of their key players out on the injury list and Pardew talking about the issue in the run up to the match. Manchester United won’t be finding any excuses because they know what is require in order to be English champions so a win is the only option for them.
Chelsea vs. Birmingham City
Look like good old Chelsea is back to their own self and the only downside to that is too little too late for any silverware this season. The issue of having a selection of strikers to choose from has got Manager Ancelotti in two minds in many occasions, but against West Brom away last weekend, a 3-1 away win saw Drogba stealing the show in the first half. The big centre forward scored a goal while both Lampard and Kalou got each a goal too, both Anelka and Torres started on the bench. Torres did managed to get a goal but it was ruled offside, so his first goal for Chelsea still awaits. Even though a win in the weekend was a good one, the future of some players and Ancelotti still remains uncertain. Both Alex and Ramires is rated doubtful to get a place in the squad for Wednesday.
Birmingham City are breathing a little bit after the weekend 2-0 win over Sunderland which put them levelled with the Black cats and with 2 other clubs, Stoke and Fulham at 38 points in the Premiership table. The relegation fight is by no means over yet and maybe with three more points, things can be a little bit better with the Blues. Manager Alex McLeish is likely to give the same eleven that went out and won in the weekend. Both Bentley and Hleb are pushing hard for a recall in the starting lineup but why would change a winning team?
Once again, nothing to play for, Chelsea will want to impress the home fans and qualifying to next year’s champions league is a must so holding on to a third place is worth the three points. Birmingham might be dangerous at St. Andrews but away from home, they aren’t the same team that has full of confidence going forward. Chelsea should have enough firepower regardless of which strikers will start on the day.
Tottenham vs. Arsenal
Grudge match between the two north London teams at White Hart Lane on Wednesday evening. Tottenham will be relinquishing to claim a double over their most fierce rivals in the Premiership. The home side has being on the job in matching Arsenal in every department and this season, Spurs went one better in the Champions League by reaching the quarterfinals for the first time, however in the Premiership they are still behind Arsenal by three spots. If spurs want to further their success then next season champions league needs to be secured and only three points can help manager Harry Redknapp to getting the resources to challenge Arsenal. Tottenham did not have a weekend game so they are well rested and most importantly a fresh Gareth Bale to repeat the 3-2 away win against Arsenal earlier this season.
The key for Manager Arsene Wenger is to have a stable goalie and a rock solid defence, a leader perhaps in both positions if possible and that is why both defender Djourou and goal keeper Szczesny were rushed back against Liverpool in the weekend. The Arsenal defence were solid throughout the 90 + odds minutes but an error at the dying minutes gave away a penalty which Arsenal ended the day with a 1-1 after scoring also on a penalty just 3 minutes from time. It does seem like Arsenal isn’t able to hold down anything these days and it must be the lack of concentration, chances were given but again Arsenal aren’t able maximise the advantage. The Premiership is slipping away and one more defeat or draw could end the Arsenal’s hopes. Wenger is still without Bartley, Fabianski, Mannone and Vermaelen while the doubtful list includes Alunia, Sagna, Song and Denilson.
After watching Arsenal against Liverpool in the weekend, it is certainly a case of concentration from the Gunners side that is lacking and costing them points home at the Emirates. Things are a bit different when Arsenal are on the travel, they seem to be more clinical and yet adventurous and what better to do that at White Hart Lane. Spurs would love to take all three points for their qualification for the champions league next season but also end Arsenal title hopes for good this season.
