Make no mistakes, this is not the Manchester United Carling Cup team taking on Arsenal this Sunday at Old Trafford. Both Tom Cleverley and Danny Wellbeck have made the grade with Ferguson and now they will test their strengthen against the Gunner. Liverpool will take on Bolton at home on Saturday while Spurs will host Manchester City at White Hart Lane.
Liverpool vs. Bolton
The title chases starts really if Liverpool can their home games and by that if they wants to challenge their rivals, Manchester United, for the Premiership title then Anfield needs to be a fortress once again. Manager Kenny Daglish has started out in his new campaign with a win and a draw, emphasis on the last home game drawing 1-1 against Sunderland but beating Arsenal 2-0 away shows the team is able to mature under the king Kenny. The team is playing with the formation of 4-4-2 and also the 4-5-1 depending on the striking force on the night. Daglish used both Suarez and Andy Carroll in the season opener but Carroll was giving the lone striker option against Arsenal. Having said that, Suarez would prefer the midfeld to consist of Downing, Meireles and Charlie Adams, most importantly Meirles because of his offensive prowl, but he is doubtful due to his shoulder socket being popped in the midweek win over Exeter City in the League Cup. Daglish hasn’t stopped buying and as the club is on the verge to sign yet another defender before the window transfer closes.
Bolton hasn’t done bad for themselves in the last two games, one thing that you can guarantee this team can do is to score goals. In the last two premiership games, Bolton has scored six goals but incurred a big 4-0 win over QPR but lost at home to Man City with a 3-2 score line. So sitting nicely mid tables at 8th place, Bolton will be looking towards Ivan Klasnic to score for his third consecutive game while Kevin Davis will be the vital playmaker. Bolton gave new striker Tuncay his debut and also scoring in the midweek 2-1 home win over Macclesfield in the Carling cup. Boss Owen Coyle will surely get his men more serious for the Anfield trip.
These are the games that Liverpool needs to win if they want to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League. There is a bit more variation in Liverpool’s play and certainly a bit more confidence from the players. The only downside is that Liverpool hasn’t seen the best of Andy Carroll yet which might not be so bad when you have Suarez scoring in three consecutive games in all competitions. Bolton felt hard done against Man City but Liverpool will gave them the same taste if their defensive issues don’t spice up. Coyle needs to think about how he will defend against Liverpool or otherwise another field day for the strikers of the opposition.
Verdict: Liverpool to win this but will get a bit of resistance along the way.
Manchester United vs. Arsenal
The kids are getting the nod and vote of confidence under Sir Alex Ferguson’s tutelage. Two games and two wins for the Manchester United, one against WBA and the other against Arsenal’s fiercest neighbor, Tottenham, last Monday at Old Trafford. The message is loud and clear, the lost of captain Vidic and Rio Ferdinand haven’t been sorely missed with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling getting the job done. That’s not all, midfielder Cleverley and Ashley Young are settling in the middle of the park while Danny Wellbeck is showing the cutting edge lethal goal scoring nose too. This is surely a mix bag of experience and Ferguson is known for his confidence into his youthful players. Surely they are making the grade each week keeping someone like Berbatov on the bench said it all.
Arsenal is being raided left and right, even down the center. Still they keep on going on, domestically and in Europe as life goes on without Cesc Fabregas and most recently to leave the club, Samir Nasri, who went to Manchester City during the midweek. All that is left for Arsenal is a pocket full of money and a fight against time to get new players in before the transfer window closes. One thing for sure is that there won’t be any players to be reinforce the Arsenal squad as they travel to Old Trafford on Saturday. They will also have to do without Song, Frimpong and Gervinho, all serving their suspension while Jack Wilshere, Koscielny and Gibbs all injured. Hampered with injuries and suspension, one thing that Arsenal can run with is their 2-1 away win over Udinese in the midweek Champions League, Theo Walcott making the grade and Van Persie hitting the target. This is definitely some positive out of a dark period under Arsene Wenger’s reign.
Arsenal made the champions league group stages and with another £20 million into their bank books, they now have the money but still lack the quality on the field and espically when they face their opposition on Sunday. While Arsenal is slowly slumping, it’s a totally different story for the Red Devil, they are steadily improving with the current crop. This isn’t a carling cup game and if so, Arsenal would be strong at any point, but since it’s the Premiership, you can’t ask the youngsters to pretend to be something they aren’t and Ferguson knows his model of bring out the youngsters are winners, unlike Arsenals’ who are destined to be sold on.
Verdict: Can’t see Manchester United passing up the three points here.
