One game from the last 16 of the Europa League, both Schalke 04 and Manchester City are looking very good to move on to the next stage. However, for City they have to take on Porto one more time on Wednesday while Plzen are looking to pull another great escape in Germany on Thursday.
Manchester City vs. Porto
Wednesday 22nd Feb – kickoff at 18:00 GMT
Leading the Premiership and also the tie, Manchester City is in a position where a win or draw will take them into the last 16 of the Europa League. This is the only game that will be played on Wednesday so definitely one of the first teams to be in the hat for the next round and the likelihood of this could favour the home side. Manchester City took a 2-1 away win last week at the Estadio do Dragao and that persuaded the situation to their advantage at the Etihad stadium. Manager Roberto Mancini might not require his best eleven to play but knowing that there are no injury worries, he is free to pick anyone, apart from Carlos Tevez or Owen Hargreaves, both not registered to play in Europe. Considering their rest on the weekend, it is likely that Dzeko, Clichy, Savic and Adam Johnson will get some playing time.
Porto are not down and out, although the chances are slimmer than they predicted. They have to score and get those two away goals or else, the defending Europa League champion is about to knock out of this year’s edition. Time is running out and with only 90 minutes left to turn the deficit to a winning position, Porto is up for a hard fight in Manchester. Their run up to the midweek Europa League 2nd leg tie, Porto took things well into their own hands with a 3-1 away win over Vitoria Setubal to maintain their 2nd place in the league where forward Marc Janko scored one of three goals. His service will be required and so to for “Hulk”, both players could help the club to get what they need on the night.
Verdict:
Leading 2-1 and a team full of strengthen, Manchester City might not be looking to put their best team out but enough to at least get a draw. City will go through but maybe it’s best to go for a over 2.5 goals on this occasion.
Schalke 04 vs. Plzen
Thursday 23rd Feb - Kickoff at 21:05 GMT
The German outfit looks to take one giant step further in this competition as they prepare the 2nd leg tie against Czech side Victoria Plzen. The first leg saw a 1-1 draw between the two sides but it is Schalke 04 who has the slight advantage with the away goal. That crucial away goal was scored by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and a recall to the starting line up is likely due to his two goals during 4-0 home win over the Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. Both Raul and Joel Matip were also on target too so don’t be surprised if you see those two in the lineup on Thursday. This shouldn’t be much of a problem as when Schalke 04 is at home, they are very much favourites to beat any one that passes by.
The Czech team were one of the teams that also got dumped out of the Champions League to get here. Once again they are faced with another knock out game which they are in a need to show off what they can do. It’s very simple, they need to score and a 1-1 draw will get them into extra time but a win is the only way forward for this team. That is what they did last weekend when they won 4-3 away against Teplice in their domestic league. That’s the sort of result that Plzen are looking for and with M. Bakos hitting two goals, that’s what they need on Thursday night.
Verdict:
Schalke 04 are good things to go through to the next round but it will be a tough ride when Plzen is on the visit. High scoring could be on the card as it is expected that Plzen needs a goal.
